![]() Baseball ACCtion: Sunday, May 11 May 11, 2008 No. 24 Virginia Stages Late Rally to Top No. 2 UNC, 5-4 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Jeremy Farrell's two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning provided the No. 24 Virginia baseball team with the go-ahead runs in a 5-4 win over No. 2 North Carolina Sunday in a rain-shortened game at Davenport Field. Shortly after the sixth inning was completed, play was halted because of inclement weather, and just over an hour later the game was called. John Barr (Fr., Ivyland, Pa.) led Virginia with two hits, while Tyler Cannon (So., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) scored twice for the Cavaliers, who finished with eight hits. Dustin Ackley, Kyle Shelton and Tim Federowicz all had two hits for North Carolina. Neal Davis (So., Baltimore, Md.) earned the win out of the bullpen to improve to 4-0 on the season. He pitched the sixth inning and came in after Andrew Carraway (Jr., Marietta, Ga.) started and tossed five innings while allowing two earned runs, six hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Brian Moran (0-1) took the loss for North Carolina after allowing the Cavaliers' fifth run. Matt Harvey started for the Tar Heels and went 3.2 innings, giving up three runs (two earned), five hits and five walks while striking out five. No. 17 NC State Wins Series Finale At Maryland, 17-8 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sunday games are often high-scoring affairs, and NC State and Maryland took that approach to the final game of their three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series Sunday, with the Wolfpack riding four big innings to a 17-8 rout of the Terrapins.
The 17th-ranked Pack scored four runs in the third, six in the fourth, and three in the sixth and seventh to improve to 35-16 overall and 17-9 in the ACC. The Terps, who scored six of their eight runs in the sixth inning, fell to 29-26 overall and 9-21 in the conference. NC State starter Alex Sogard rolled through the first five innings and carried a 14-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth before hitting the wall and turning the game over to the bullpen. Sogard (4-1) worked five-plus innings and allowed six runs, five earned, on six hits. He walked two and struck out three. Maryland starter Mike Sufczynski went 3 2/3 innings to take the loss and fal to 2-2. He gave up seven runs on five hits and three walks. He did not record a strikeout. Tigers Tally Season-High 20 Hits in 16-6 Win at #25 Georgia Tech Sunday Atlanta, GA - Eight Tigers tallied at least two hits and Clemson totaled a season-high 20 hits in its 16-6 victory over #25 Georgia Tech in front of 1,781 fans at Russ Chandler Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Clemson also tied its season high for both runs and extra-base hits (7). The Tigers improved to 26-25-1 overall and 11-18-1 in ACC play. The Yellow Jackets, who won the series 2-1, fell to 36-15 overall and 14-13 in the ACC. Jeff Schaus paced the Tigers by going 5-for-6 with a double, two runs scored, and four RBIs. The five hits were a career high for the freshman from Naples, FL. Wilson Boyd added a home run and four RBIs, Mike Freeman had two hits and three runs scored, and Ben Paulsen hit two of Clemson's five doubles. Trey Delk (2-1) pitched 5.2 stellar innings to earn the win. On a day that saw strong winds blowing out, he allowed just three hits, two runs, and one walk with four strikeouts. Georgia Tech starter Zach Von Tersch (6-4) suffered the loss, as he allowed five runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings pitched. Wake Forest Closes Hooks Stadium With Sweep of Duke WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest closed the books on Gene Hooks Stadium in style, completing a sweep of ACC rival Duke on a wet Sunday afternoon. Behind a three-run home run from Mike Murray, the Demon Deacons downed the Blue Devils 9-4. Wake Forest won its sixth consecutive game to improve to 22-27 overall and 11-15 in the ACC. The Deacons now just need to win once at Boston College next weekend or have Duke lose once at Virginia Tech in order to qualify for the eight-team ACC Tournament. The Blue Devils drop to 34-17-1 overall and 8-17-1 in conference play with Sunday's loss. The Deacons played their final game at Hooks Stadium, as the Wake Forest baseball program is set to move to nearby Ernie Shore Field for the 2009 season. Wake did not just close out the facility with a sweep, it posted consecutive victories in each of its last six home games. Overall, the Deacons went 510-229-3 in 28 seasons at the venue. On Sunday, Wake jumped on the Blue Devils early, putting together a five-run rally in the second inning to take a 6-1 advantage. Murray capped the rally with his three-run home run. It was Murray's sixth homer of the year and his second in as many games. Murray, who went 2-for-4 on Sunday, extended his hitting streak to eight games. He has had a hit in 21 of his last 22 games. Florida State Downs Savannah State 24-4 Tallahassee, Fla. - Third-ranked Florida State (43-8) rolled to its third straight victory over Savannah State (20-24) with a 24-4 win on Mother's Day at Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles tied a season-high with 21 hits including nine for extra bases in a game called after seven innings due to the run-rule. FSU registered four more home runs in game three bringing the series total to 12. Florida State scored in every inning in game three and has posted a run in 17 of the 18 innings in which they have made an appearance at the plate. Freshman Stuart Tapley became the second Seminole to record six RBIs in a game this year knocking in all six runs in his first two plate appearances on Sunday. The Orlando, Fla., native hit back-to-back home runs in his two at-bats including his first career grand slam in the bottom of the second. Tapley took a 2-1 offering from Tiger starter Matt Oglesby (1-4) and hit it over the fence in straight away center field. He hit his first round tripper of the game over the wall in left center in the first. Tapley has reached base in seven straight at-bats and in nine of 10 appearances at the plate in the series. He is hitting .889 in the first three games. Buster and Jack Posey led all hitters with three hits a piece. Buster went 3-for-3 with his 20th double of the season and a pair of singles. He scored three times and collected an RBI. Jack registered three singles and two RBIs. BC Baseball Falls to Northeastern, 6-3 CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College (24-25) dropped a non-conference game against Northeastern (23-23-1), 6-3, on Sunday afternoon at Commander Shea Field. Charly Bashara (3-1) earned the win on hill for the Huskies. The left-hander worked 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with one strikeout. Terry Doyle (3-7) suffered the loss out of the bullpen. In his first relief appearance of the season, Doyle worked two innings and allowed four runs on five hits. The senior also collected a walk and two strikeouts. |
