![]() Baseball ACCtion: Saturday, May 9
May 10, 2009
No. 1 Tar Heels Outlast State, 5-2 After the start of the game was delayed 80 minutes due to inclement weather, Warren (6-2) allowed two runs on two hits in the first but retired the next nine batters he faced and blanked State (23-28, 9-17 ACC) for the next 4 1/3 innings on just two hits. He struck out seven and gave up two runs on four hits and three walks over 5 1/3. Saturday marked the third time in the last four starts that Warren allowed two or more runs in the first and kept the opposition off the scoreboard for the rest of his outing. He also did against Florida State and Miami. Warren's win was the 28th of his career, which is tied with Jim Dougherty for third in school history. Ninth Inning Rally Lifts Florida State To 8-6 Victory Over Georgia Tech Down a run to start the ninth, Florida State quickly put the pressure on Georgia Tech loading the bases with no outs. After Yellow Jacket reliever Mark Pope recorded a strikeout, pinch hitter James Ramsey brought home Mike McGee for the tying run as he drew a walk. Sean Gilmartin followed with a pinch hit bloop single to left scoring Jason Stidham for the eventual game-winning run. The Seminoles pushed their lead to two as Rafael Lopez sent a sac-fly to center to bring home Stuart Tapley. Georgia Tech would not go quietly in the ninth loading the bases with two outs. Closer Jimmy Marshall preserved the win as he got pinch hitter Jason Garofalo to hit into a fielder's choice groundout at second for the final out of the inning. The save for Marshall was his ninth as he remained perfect on the year in save opportunities. No. 11 Virginia Rallies from Six Down, Tops Duke 10-9 The big rally was UVa’s second such comeback this year. The Cavaliers scored six runs in the ninth inning April 11 at Georgia Tech to win 11-10. Steven Proscia (Fr., Suffern, N.Y.) homered for the second straight day for the Cavaliers. He reached base four times and finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs. Phil Gosselin (So., West Chester, Pa.) also had two hits and scored twice, while John Hicks (Fr., Sandy Hook, Va.) had a pair of hits and two RBI and Dan Grovatt (So., Tabernacle, N.J.) nabbed two hits and scored twice. Bennett Hits Three Homers, Drives in Eight Runs in 10-9 Win against Wake Forest Bennett's third home run of the game turned an 8-6 Maryland deficit into a 9-8 lead in the seventh inning. Bennett became the third player in Maryland history to hit three homers in a game. Jason Mohap hit three homers against Coppin State in 1999 and Brian Jarosinski hit three against Hartford in 2004. Bennett matched Mohap's record for RBIs in a game. Mohap drove in eight runs in that three-homer performance against Coppin State. Carlos Lopez delivered a two-run homer off Maryland starting pitcher Adam Kolarek in the top of the second to stake the Demon Deacons (21-26, 6-20 ACC) to an early 2-0 lead. Eight-Run Third Inning Lifts #19 Clemson Over Seahawks 11-3 Saturday After the first Tiger was retired in the third inning, the next eight batters combined to tally two homers, three doubles, and three singles during the rest of the frame to break the game open. It was Clemson's highest-scoring inning of the year by two runs. Clemson starter Casey Harman (6-3) pitched 6.0 strong innings to earn the win. The sophomore lefthander allowed six hits, two runs (one earned), and one walk while tying his career high with nine strikeouts. Justin Sarratt and Will Lamb combined to pitch the final 3.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits. UNC Wilmington starter Cameron Roth (0-2) suffered the loss, as he gave up nine runs on 11 hits in 2.1 innings pitched. Grandal's Six RBI Leads No. 15 Miami Past B-CU, 14-4 The win pushed Miami's record this year to 32-17 while Bethune-Cookman drops to 28-26. Grandal, who has now homered in five of UM's last nine games, also hit a two-run single in the fourth that would prove to be the game-winner before recording another RBI single in the seventh, finishing the night 3-for-5. Scott Lawson also had an impressive night at the plate, scoring four times after reaching base in all six of his plate appearances. Lawson led off the game with a double before walking in the second and fourth, singling in the fifth, and walking twice more in the seventh and eighth. Behind Lawson in the lineup, Ryan Jackson went 1-for-3 with three walks and three runs while Chris Herrmann and Dave DiNatale each finished with two hits. Le Moyne Scores In Ninth To Take Down Boston College, 5-4 After the first two batters were retired in the ninth, Le Moyne's Matt Marra got himself on third base. He doubled down the line in right and was able to hustle to third when the throw to second got past the bag. Chris Edmondson drove in the game-winning run when he got a hold of a 3-2 pitch and dropped it in front of the center fielder. BC would threaten in the bottom half of the frame but couldn't get a run across. Sophomore Matt Hamlet walked with one out and then junior Tony Sanchez pulled the first pitch he saw for a single to put runners on first and second base. Luke Nellis got a big strikeout for out number two and then Sean Paino made a diving play in center to rob BC of a hit to end the game.
