Wake Forest Opens Final Weekend at Hooks Stadium With 7-3 Defeat of Duke

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Ben Hunter had just about everything working for the Demon Deacons on Friday, as he pitched Wake Forest to a 7-3 defeat of Duke in the opening game of the final weekend at Hooks Stadium.

Hunter's outing and some timely hitting sent the Deacons to their fourth-straight victory, which stands as Wake's long winning streak of the season. The Deacs improve to 20-27 overall and 9-15 in the ACC with the win. More importantly, Wake moved ahead of Duke for the eighth and final spot in the ACC Tournament. The Blue Devils, who had their five-game winning streak snapped, dropped to 34-15-1 overall and 8-15-1 in conference play with the loss.

Hunter (3-5) picked up the win for Wake Forest with 7 1/3 innings of work. The senior righthander made his final outing at Hooks Stadium count, as he allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter. Hunter was perfect through the initial 3 1/3 innings, retiring each of the first 10 batters in order before giving up a single to Matt Williams with one out in the fourth.

Hunter's pitching performance was not the only story on the day, as the Deacon hitters came through at the plate. Allan Dykstra, Dustin Hood and Mike Murray drove in two runs apiece to lead Wake. Hood finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Evan Ocheltree turned in the only other multi-hit performance by going 2-for-4.

Duncan Pitches No. 25 Tech Baseball Past Clemson, 5-1

ATLANTA - David Duncan worked eight solid innings while Charlie Blackmon and Tony Plagman collected three hits apiece to lead No. 25 Georgia Tech (35-14, 13-12 ACC) to a 5-1 win over Clemson (25-24-1) Friday night in the series opener at Russ Chandler Stadium. Duncan (7-2) gave up just one run - a solo home run in the sixth - on six hits while striking out five and walking none to earn his seventh win of the season. Andrew Robinson tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to finish off the Tigers.

An RBI groundout by Jason Haniger, followed by run-scoring singles by Blackmon and Jeff Rowland staked the Yellow Jackets to a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Blackmon went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI while Rowland finished the night 2-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt.

Tech extended its lead to 4-0 when Plagman reached on a two-out double in the third inning and scored on Feltes RBI single. Plagman went 3-for-4 with two runs scored against Clemson, and Feltes collected two hits in four at bats.

Tekotte, No.1 Hurricanes Homer Past Hokies

Due to the threat of inclement weather Sunday, the Hurricanes and Hokies will wrap up their series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Junior centerfielder Blake Tekotte tied a school record with three home runs and Miami hit five home runs in a game for the third time this season as the No. 1 ranked Hurricanes (40-5, 21-2 ACC) won its 40th game with a 12-4 win over Virginia Tech (20-29, 4-21 ACC) Friday evening at English Field. Yonder Alonso and Dennis Raben also both homered for Miami, which scored at least 10 runs for the 21st time this season.

Tekotte ended up 3-for-3 with four RBI and four runs scored. Raben and Yasmani Grandal each added a pair of RBI.

Freshman lefty Chris Hernandez improved to 9-0 for Miami. He struck out six in 6 2/3 innings and gave up just two earned runs on nine hits. Kyle Bellamy and Carlos Gutierrez held Virginia Tech to one unearned run and one hit in the final 2 1/3 innings.

Virginia Tech starter Rhett Ballard dropped to 3-7 as he allowed eight runs, six earned and struck out four. Sean Ryan, Austin Wates, Klint Reed and Chris Kay each had two hits for the Hokies, who out-hit Miami, 10-8.

White, Ackley Send No. 2 Tar Heels Past No. 24 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Right-hander Alex White struck out eight over six strong innings, and first baseman Dustin Ackley posted his second straight three-RBI game to lift No. 2 North Carolina to a 9-3 series-opening win over No. 24 Virginia Friday at Davenport Field. The Tar Heels (41-8, 19-5 ACC) won for their 16th time in the last 17 games and posted their third straight victory over the Cavaliers (33-16, 13-12 ACC) dating to last season.

White (8-2) held Virginia to just six hits and three runs in six-plus innings to move to 2-0 in his career versus the Cavaliers. After allowing three runs over the first two innings, the Greenville, N.C., product settled down and faced just two over the minimum over the next four frames without allowing a hit.

White left with one on in the seventh, and lefty Brian Moran, who tossed two shutout innings, came on to strand two runners and preserve a four-run lead for the Tar Heels. Rob Wooten closed with a scoreless ninth inning.

Ackley, who was 2-for-3 with a two-run double in the fourth and a sacrifice fly in the eighth, was one of three Tar Heels with two hits on the night. Shortstop Garrett Gore was 2-for-4 with two RBI for his third straight multi-hit game, and third baseman Chad Flack went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Nine different players hit safely for UNC.

Friday's Maryland Game against No. 17 NC State Postponed Due to Rain

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Friday night's baseball game between Maryland and No. 17 NC State has been postponed due to rain and will be made up as part of a Saturday doubleheader.

Saturday's scheduled TV game on Fox Sports Net will still start at 1 p.m., with the second game beginning approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first.

Florida State Powers Past Savannah State 23-4

Tallahassee, Fla. - Third-ranked Florida State (41-8) registered a season-high for runs in a game with a 23-4 victory over Savannah State (20-22) Friday night on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles reached the 20-hit plateau for the third time this season while nine of their 20 hits went for extra bases including five home runs. It marked the 19th time this season the Garnet and Gold hit multiple home runs in a game and the third time with at least five round trippers.

Jack Rye, Buster Posey, Mike McGee, Stephen Cardullo and Ruairi O'Connor each connected on a home run in the game one victory.

In a game called after seven innings due to the run-rule, FSU scored a run in every inning that they came to the plate. All nine starters recorded a hit led by McGee who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two singles and his fifth home run of the season in the fourth.
