Baseball Falls to No. 13 Miami in Series Opener, 5-1

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Miami's Chris Hernandez allowed a run in the first inning and then kept the Boston College baseball team scoreless the rest of the way as the No. 13 Hurricanes beat the Eagles, 5-1, Friday afternoon at a rainy Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.

Hernandez earned the win on the bump after throwing 7.0 innings and scattering six hits. He struck out eight and walked two. BC senior JB MacDonald had a solid outing as well, working 6.1 innings and allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out three and walked four but was saddled with the loss.

Junior Robbie Anston was the only Eagle to knock two hits on the day, going 2-for-4 with a double while also scoring BC's only run of the game. Sophomore Mickey Wiswall drove the run in on a fielder's choice.

Yasmani Grandal led Miami (30-15, 14-11 ACC) at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a solo home run, two runs scored and a pair of RBI. Jason Hagerty went 1-for-3 while driving in two runs and Ryan Jackson went 2-for-4.

No. 9 Seminoles take down Hokies

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Ninth-ranked Florida State won its 10th consecutive game on Friday night, knocking off the Virginia Tech baseball team by a score of 10-2 in ACC action at Dick Howser Stadium.

Tech fell to 27-18 overall and 10-14 in the ACC with the loss, while the Seminoles improved to 31-12 overall and 16-7 in league play.

First baseman Austin Wates did most of the damage for the Hokies, going 4-for-5 with two runs driven in and his fourth home run of the season. Stephen Cardullo also had a 4-for-5 effort to pace the Seminoles.

Wates got things started with a solo home run for the Hokies in the top of the first inning, but the lead was short-lived, as an Omar Danesh triple keyed a three-run Florida State third inning. Mike McGee scored the first run on a wild pitch by Tech starter Rhett Ballard, while Jason Stidham, who singled, and Tommy Oravetz, who was hit by a pitch, both touched home on Danesh's triple.
