April 30, 2008 Wake Forest Downs UNC Greensboro, 11-6; Sweeps Season Series GREENSBORO, N.C. - Wake Forest used a combination of power and speed, getting a grand slam from Allan Dykstra and four stolen bases from Steven Brooks, to earn an 11-6 defeat of UNC Greensboro Tuesday evening at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. After falling behind by a run in the first, Wake Forest took a big lead in the second, scoring six runs in the frame, the final four of which came on Dykstra's grand slam. From there, the Deacons staved off several Spartan rallies to hold on for the win. UNCG cut the deficit to two, 7-5, after the fourth. However, Wake responded with a pair of runs in the fifth to take control of the game. Dykstra finished the evening 2-for-4 with four RBIs, a homer and a double. Brooks went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and four stolen bases. The freshman came within one steal of tying the school record. Andy Goff also had a pair of hits for the Deacons, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Willy Fox extended his hitting streak to 10 games with his single in the seventh. No. 23 Virginia Baseball Pounds Mount St. Mary's, 11-1 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Jeremy Farrell (Jr., Westlake, Ohio) went 4-for-5 with a home run and two doubles as the No. 23 Virginia baseball team rung up an 11-1 win Tuesday night over Mount St. Mary's. Virginia scored in each of the first five innings to jump out to a big lead and used strong pitching to coast from there. Farrell notched his third career four-hit game and also scored twice and drove in two to lead the Cavaliers' 16-hit attack. After missing a month because of injury, Phil Gosselin (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) returned to the Virginia lineup and went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Franco Valdes (So., Miami, Fla.) and Greg Miclat (Jr., Concord, N.C.) each added two hits. Tommy Flynn had a three-hit game for Mount St. Mary's, which finished with seven hits. Virginia pitchers were strong as well, racking up a season-high 15 strikeouts. Robert Poutier (Sr., Yorktown, Va.) improved to 2-0 after starting and pitching 5.0 innings while surrendering one run, five hits and a walk with five strikeouts. The UVa bullpen - Kevin Arico (Fr., Flemington, N.J.), Brad Grove (Jr., Glen Allen, Va.), Jake Rule (Sr., Winchester, Va.) and Michael Schwimer (Sr., Alexandria, Va.) - combined to strike out 10 and allow just two baserunners over the final four innings. DeLand, Fla. - Third-ranked Florida State (36-7) registered its seventh consecutive non-conference victory with a 13-3 win over Stetson (19-27) Tuesday night in front of 2,751 at Melching Field, the eighth largest crowd in stadium history. The Seminoles reached the double-digit run plateau for the fourth straight game against the Hatters outscoring Stetson 60-9 during the stretch. The win was the tenth straight for Florida State in the series. Five Seminoles recorded multiple hits in game one led by Tyler Holt and Jack Rye who collected four hits each. Holt doubled, hit three singles and walked once while setting a career-high with four runs scored. Rye followed with a double, three singles and a walk as the senior right fielder drove in three and scored once. Tony Delmonico went 3-for-5, while Stephen Cardullo made his fifth straight start at third and tied a career-high with two hits in five at-bats. Buster Posey reached base on all five plate appearances walking in his first two at-bats. He followed with back-to-back home runs in the fourth and fifth inning and was hit by a pitch in the seventh. Posey also registered three RBIs and three runs scored.
