Hernandez, No. 1 Miami Shuts Out No. 16 UVa, 1-0

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Freshman lefthander Chris Hernandez tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts in a career-long eight innings of work as No. 1 Miami recorded its first league shutout since 2006 with a 1-0 victory over No. 16 Virginia (32-13, 13-9 ACC) Friday night at Mark Light Field. Junior Blake Tekotte's two-out single to right in the sixth scored freshman Joey Terdoslavich for the lone run of the ball game, giving Miami (34-5, 18-2 ACC) its 10th straight Friday night win to open the season.

Hernandez (7-0) struck out six of the first seven UVa batters to open the game. He allowed just two hits and walked only one, facing just 26 batters on the night before giving way to Carlos Gutierrez in the ninth inning. Gutierrez recorded his 10th save of the season, allowing one hit while striking out one in the ninth to secure the shutout.

Virginia starter Pat McAnaney (4-2) put in a strong performance in a losing effort, allowing just the one run on six hits while walking one and striking out six in eight innings.

Tekotte and Terdolsavich each went 2-for-3. Greg Miclat, David Adams and John Barr each had one hit for the Cavaliers.

Eleven-Run Eighth Lifts Tar Heels Past Florida State, 11-4

CARY, N.C. - In a meeting of two of the nation's top three teams, North Carolina scored 11 times in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally from a three-run deficit and claim an improbable 11-4 win over Florida State Friday at Cary's USA Baseball National Training Complex. The Tar Heels (37-7, 17-4 ACC) held the Seminoles (34-6, 18-4 ACC) to a season-low four hits en route to their 12th straight victory and their longest winning streak since 2002.

With Florida State holding a 3-0 lead, Carolina sent 15 men to the plate in the eighth with 10 straight batters reaching base at one point. Of the Tar Heels' 11-runs, 10 came with two men out in the inning.

Shortstop Garrett Gore tied the game with a two-out, two-run single, and Mark Fleury drove in the go-ahead run on a bases-loaded walk before the floodgates opened for the Tar Heels in their biggest offensive inning of the season.

First baseman Dustin Ackley and right fielder Tim Fedroff each finished with three hits on the night, while Gore added two. Left fielder Kyle Shelton put the game out of reach in the eighth with a three-run home run, the third of his career.

Shunick Fans 11, Paces No. 22 NC State To 5-1 Win Over BC

RALEIGH, N.C. - Clayton Shunick has been NC State's best pitcher all season, and he pitched like it Friday night against Boston College. In the first game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series, Shunick struck out 11 batters, recorded eight outs in a row by strikeout, and retired 22 of the last 25 men he faced as NC State defeated the Eagles 5-1.

The win, NC State's 14th in its last 18 games, lifted the Wolfpack to 28-13 overall and 13-8 in the ACC and in second place in the Atlantic Division. Boston College lost for the eighth time in its last 10 games and dropped to 20-22 overall and 5-17 in the conference.

Shunick actually faced seven batters before recording his first strikeout of the game, punching out Sam Shaughnessy on four pitches to end the second inning. Holding a 1-0 lead after Pat Ferguson belted his eighth homer in the bottom of the first, Shunick gave up a run on two hits in the second inning. Garret Smith rolled a single through the left side of the infield to score Erik Campbell, who led off the inning with a double, tying the game at 1-1.

Haniger Powers Tech Baseball to 12-1 Win Over Wake Forest

ATLANTA - Jason Haniger had a career-high five RBI with two home runs while David Duncan allowed just one run through eight innings to lead Georgia Tech (30-12, 11-11 ACC) to a 12-1 victory over Wake Forest (16-26, 7-14 ACC) Friday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Haniger went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and a double to help Georgia Tech eclipse the 30-win mark for the 26th-consecutive season. His two-run home run in the second inning gave the Yellow Jackets a 4-0 lead, and he blasted a three-run shot in the seventh inning for his sixth home run of the season.

Yellow Jacket starter David Duncan improved to 5-2 on the year by holding the Demon Deacons to one run on six hits in eight innings of work. He also struck out seven and walked just three before turning the ball over to Kevin Jacob, who tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Brad Feltes, Luke Murton and Tony Plagman all had two hits as Tech posted 13 on the night. Murton's two doubles extended his streak to seven-straight hits going for extra bases. Thirteen of his last 14 hits have also been for extra bases, spanning the last six games. The Yellow Jackets had seven extra-base hits on the night.

Three Tigers Homer as Clemson Defeats Virginia Tech 13-5 Friday

Clemson, SC - Wilson Boyd, Ben Paulsen, and Kyle Parker each hit home runs to highlight Clemson's 13-5 victory over Virginia Tech on Friday in game-one of a three-game series in front of 4,885 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Tigers improved to 22-20-1 overall and 8-13-1 in the ACC, while the Hokies fell to 18-24 overall and 4-18 in conference play.

Boyd went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and four RBIs to lead Clemson's 10-hit attack. Parker added a three-run homer and Paulsen had two hits, including a double and solo home run. Sean O'Brien and Steve Bumbry each homered for the Hokies, who totaled 10 hits as well.

Five Tiger pitchers contributed to the win. Richmond, VA native Graham Stoneburner (5-2) earned the win, allowing five hits and three runs (one earned) in 5.0 innings pitched in a starting role. Rhett Ballard (2-5) pitched 4.0 innings, as he allowed eight runs (five earned) on five hits to take the loss.

Maryland Baseball Wins Series Opener at Duke, 12-8

DURHAM, N.C. - Mike Murphy hit two home runs and drove in a career-high four runs and Steve Braun had three hits and a pair of clutch two-out RBI singles to lead the University of Maryland baseball team to a crucial 12-8 victory at Duke Friday night.

Coupled with Wake Forest's loss at Georgia Tech Friday night, the Terps (26-19, 8-14) temporarily moved into the key eighth spot in the ACC standings, putting them in control of their ACC Tournament destiny.

Maryland jumped on Duke (29-14-1, 6-14-1) from the get-go. Braun (Granada Hills, Calif./Pierce CC) hit Andrew Wolcott's second pitch of the game into the right-center field gap and reached third base for a leadoff triple. Two batters later, designated hitter Jensen Pupa (Germantown, Md./Northwest) gave the Terps the lead with an RBI single to center field.

Murphy (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Prep) made it 3-0 Maryland immediately, following Pupa's single with a first-pitch home run to dead center field, his team-leading 11th of the season.
