Baseball ACCtion: Friday, April 23
April 23, 2010
No. 2 Virginia Baseball Wallops Maryland 27-4 to Sweep DH Virginia (32-9, 14-6 ACC) fell two runs shy of the program record for runs in a game - both overall and in the team's ACC history. In ACC play the Cavaliers' 27-run effort is topped only by 29- and 28-run outings in 1990 and 1978, respectively. Both also were against Maryland. The school record of 29 runs has been set three times - 2007 against Niagara, 1990 against Maryland and 1901 against Bellevue High School. The 27-run outburst is the sixth-most runs in a game in program history, behind the three 29-run games and 28-run outings in 1971 vs. Richmond and 1978 vs. Maryland. UVa now has scored 27 runs on five occasions in the program's 122-year history.

No. 9 Miami Wins Series Opener at No. 6 FSU, 6-5 Trailing 4-1 after four innings, Miami scored two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to take a lead that UM's bullpen would hold on to. Jerad Grundy (2-0) earned his second win of the season - tossing 1 1/3 scoreless in relief - while Daniel Miranda allowed a run in two innings of work to earn his fourth save of the season. Miami improved to 29-9 overall and 15-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, picking up its sixth straight win and 14th in its last 16 games. FSU dropped to 29-10 and 12-7 with the loss. Tar Heels, Harvey Top Tigers 5-3 Harvey (5-2) continued to get stronger as the game progressed allowing three runs on six hits with 15 strikeouts en route to his first career complete-game. The Mystic, Conn., native caught nine Clemson batters looking at a called third strike and struck out the side three times. The junior tossed the program's first complete-game since April of 2009. The 15 strikeouts eclipse his previous career-high of 13 and are just four shy of the single-game school record 19 strikeouts. Harvey has now struck out double-digit batters in four different starts this season. No. 20 Hokies top No. 3 Yellow Jackets in 11-inning battle The win improved Virginia Tech to 27-13 overall and 10-9 in the ACC, and also marked the Hokies’ sixth win over a top-10 team in the past 10 conference games. Georgia Tech, which entered the game as the league’s top offensive team and ranked among the nation’s top 10 in six offensive categories, fell to 33-6 overall and 15-4 in the ACC. It was only the Yellow Jackets’ second loss at home this season (22-2). Playing in their first extra-inning game of the year, the Hokies entered the 11th looking break open a game that had been tied at one apiece since the sixth inning. Catcher Steve Domecus got things started with a one-out single to extend his hitting streak to 17 games. Right fielder Austin Wates, who provided Virginia Tech’s only run to that point with a solo homer in the sixth, then singled up the middle to send Domecus to third in a successful hit-and-run. Stroman Pitches Duke to 10-3 Win Over Wake Forest Stroman (5-1) surrendered just five hits in his nine innings and did not give up an earned run until the bottom of the ninth inning. Stroman, who made his first 12 pitching appearances in relief, struck out three of the last four batters he faced and held the Demon Deacons scoreless for seven straight frames until the ninth inning. Duke (23-16, 7-12 ACC) gave Stroman plenty of run support, highlighted by a trio of home runs from Jeremy Gould, Will Currier and Jake Lemmerman. Gould's long ball came in the fourth inning and erased a 1-0 deficit, while Currier and Lemmerman's homers both came in a six-run ninth inning.
