No. 2 Tar Heels Topple No. 20 Seminoles, 12-7 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Right-hander Adam Warren rebounded from a rocky start to toss 6 1/3 strong innings, and No. 2 North Carolina scored 12 consecutive runs en route to a 12-7 win over No. 20 Florida State Saturday at Dick Howser Stadium. The Tar Heels (27-8, 10-6 ACC) built a nine-run lead with two four-run frames and survived a ninth-inning FSU rally to even the series. Warren (4-2) allowed three runs on three hits in the first inning but settled down from there and gave up just one hit the rest of the way. Over 6 1/3, the New Bern native held the Seminoles (20-11, 8-7 ACC) to just the three runs on four hits and a career high-tying five walks, while striking out six. Warren's first win since March 15 was the 26th victory of his career, which is good for a tie for fifth in school history. Ben Bunting went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI, and Mike Cavasinni was 2-for-3 with a career-best three RBI and two runs, as eight of nine starters hit safely for Carolina. Garrett Gore, Ryan Graepel, Mark Fleury and Jacob Stallings each added two hits, and Graepel and Dustin Ackley both added two RBI. FSU left-hander Brian Busch (1-2) was hit for seven runs on nine hits and two walks over five innings. Four Seminoles had two-hit efforts to lead the offense.
Hokies win pitcher's duel over Maryland 4-3 COLLEGE PARK, Md – The Virginia Tech baseball team was held to just four hits on Saturday afternoon at Maryland, but the Hokie pitching staff limited the host Terrapins to only six of their own, claiming game two of the series at Shipley Field by a score of 4-3. The Hokies didn’t have a base-runner over the final four innings, as the Maryland pitching staff struck out 12 Tech batters on the day, including eight of 10 at one point. But all four of Tech’s hits were doubles, and three of them came consecutively in a four-run fifth inning that proved to be all the Hokies needed. That’s because Tech’s pitchers were equally as dominant, limiting the Terps to just six base knocks for the second straight day. One week after throwing his second career complete game, starter Justin Wright was solid again, going seven innings and allowing three runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out four. Relievers Sean McDermott and Brandon Fisher combined to shut out the Terps on just one hit over the final two frames, with Fisher earning his third save of the season. Tech’s bullpen has not allowed a run since April 4. Wright improved to 3-1 with the win, and now owns a 7-1 career record.
MacDonald's Masterpiece Leads Baseball To Doubleheader Sweep at Wake Forest WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior JB MacDonald dominated Wake Forest from the mound and threw 8.0 innings of no-hit baseball in the first game of a doubleheader at the Wake Forest Baseball Park Saturday, leading Boston College to a 23-2 win. The Eagles went on to win the second game as well in come-from-behind fashion, 4-2. MacDonald had faced the minimum numbers of batters from the second inning on, but Austin Stadler broke up the no-hitter with a double down the right field line to leadoff the ninth. Wake Forest would eventually score their only two runs of the game in the inning. BC got on the board immediately in the top of the first with three runs. With one out, sophomore Matt Hamlet went opposite field for a single on a 2-1 offering and then junior Tony Sanchez walked to put two men on. Wiswall then drove the first pitch he saw on the day over the wall in right field for a three-run homer to put BC on the board. In game two, Boston College was down two runs entering the eighth inning, but the Eagles put up four runs in the frame to take the lead and the win in the second game of the doubleheader. Sophomore John Leonard started on the bump and had a solid outing, throwing 5.0 innings and allowing two runs on four hits. Classmate Kevin Moran got the win after working 2.0 innings and allowing two hits. He got the Eagles out of first and second and bases loaded jams - both with nobody out - in the seventh and eighth innings. Belfiore earned his seventh save of the season after tossing 2.0 perfect innings and striking out three. Sanchez and Belfiore both went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, RBI and a run. Butera went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Plagman Lifts No. 8 Georgia Tech Past No. 11 Virginia, 7-6 ATLANTA - A ninth-inning RBI single by Tony Plagman gave No. 8 Georgia Tech (21-7, 10-4 ACC) to a 7-6 win over No. 11 Virginia (27-7, 8-6 ACC) Saturday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium. The Yellow Jackets scored four runs over the final three innings, capped by Plagman's one-out single to right field in the bottom of the ninth. Virginia reliever Matt Packer forced a groundout to begin the inning, but back-to-back infield singles from Derek Dietrich and Jason Haniger put runners on first and second for Plagman. The Yellow Jacket first baseman then plated Dietrich for the winning run when he offered at the first pitch he saw off Packer.
No. 11 UVa Stuns No. 8 Ga. Tech with Six-Run Ninth, Wins 11-10 ATLANTA – Trailing 10-5 entering the ninth inning, the No. 11 Virginia baseball team staged a huge rally, posting six runs in the inning to shock eighth-ranked Georgia Tech, 11-10, Saturday night at Russ Chandler Stadium. Keith Werman (Fr., Vienna, Va.) notched the deciding hit with a two-out single to score John Hicks (Fr., Sandy Hook, Va.). The first five Virginia batters reached in the ninth inning against Yellow Jackets’ closer Mark Pope. The Cavaliers tied the game on a Hicks sacrifice fly, and he reached when center fielder Jeff Rowland dropped the ball. Werman, who came in with one hit in five prior ACC at bats, then slapped a base hit through the hole into left field and Hicks slid in safely to beat the throw to give the Wahoos the 11-10 advantage.
No. 5 Miami Wins First Game One at No. 20 Clemson, 12-8 CLEMSON, S.C. - The fifth-ranked University of Miami baseball team took advantage of three early home runs and two four-run innings to take the first game of Saturday's double-header against No. 20 Clemson, 12-8, at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. After falling behind 1-0 after one, the Hurricanes (25-8, 11-5 ACC) scored four runs in the second, one in the third, one in the fourth, four in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a convincing lead over the Tigers (21-12, 9-7 ACC). The `Canes hit two homers in the deciding second, including a three-run blast by Dave DiNatale to straight-away center to break a 1-1 tie to put the `Canes up for good. Seven of the nine hitters in UM's lineup had at least one hit, including lead-off man Nathan Melendres who reached base in all five plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with a pair of walks. DiNatale finished the game 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored while Yasmani Grandal went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and three runs scored and Ted Blackman went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Chris Herrmann also plated three runs for UM, while Jason Hagerty had solo homer.
Clemson, SC - Freshman lefthander Chris Dwyer pitched a complete game two-hitter and struck out a career-high 10 batters to lead #20 Clemson to a 9-1 win over #5 Miami (FL) in the second game of a doubleheader at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Saturday night. The Tigers, who evened the series 1-1, improved to 22-12 overall and 10-7 in the ACC, while the Hurricanes fell to 25-9 overall and 11-6 in ACC play. Dwyer (4-2) tossed the first complete game by a Tiger in 2009. He gave up just two hits, one run, and four walks with 10 strikeouts to earn the win. Only two Hurricane batters advanced past first base and just one advanced past second base during the entire game. Ryan Jackson singled in the third inning and stole second but was stranded there. Jason Hagerty provided the only run for Miami when he hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. NC State and Duke Split Twinbill DURHAM, N.C. – Duke rebounded from a series-opening 3-1 loss against NC State to take game two of a Saturday double header 11-2 behind a six-inning, eight-strikeout performance from Christopher Manno Saturday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field. NC State’s game one starter, Jimmy Gillheeney (5-1) held Duke to one run over eight complete innings to outduel Duke game one starter Andrew Wolcott (5-2), who scattered three runs and seven hits over a career-high matching 7.1 innings. Neither starter allowed a run after the fourth inning in the opening game while each topped 110 pitches with Gillheeney firing 115 and Wolcott a career-high 123. Game two featured a one-hit performance from Manno (3-4), who allowed just one hit in his six innings and threw a career-high 110 pitches. Reliever Dennis O'Grady took over for Manno and retired the first eight batters he faced on the way to his first save of the season.
