DURHAM, N.C. - Junior Ed Conrey (Levittown, Pa.) tripled and then scored the game-winning run on a RBI-single by sophomore Wes Goodner (Tampa, Fla.) in the sixth inning as the Duke baseball team (17-18) defeated visiting Averett (10-26-1), 9-7, on Thursday at Jack Coombs Field.

Duke trailed 5-0 after giving up three runs in the first and two in third before scoring five in the bottom of the third to tie the score. Freshman Kevin Kelly (Gloucester, N.J.) doubled in two runs to start the Blue Devil scoring followed by a RBI ground out by senior John Benik (Little Neck, N.Y.) scoring Goodner from third. Sophomore David Mason also scored on a error by the shortstop in the inning after reaching on a RBI single.

Duke pitcher Tyler Lang, who entered the game in the second inning, only allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings of work to improve his record to 2-2 on the year. The loss went to Averetts Chris Shaip (1-4) after allowing five runs on seven hits.

The Cougars rallied for two runs in the ninth off of Blue Devil junior pitcher Brad Dupree (Miami, Fla.) before he recorded the final out.

Duke opens a three-game ACC series with Georgia Tech on Friday at 3 pm followed by games on Saturday and Sunday starting at 1 pm both days.
