![]() Baseball ACCtion: Sunday, April 5
April 6, 2009
No. 5 Tar Heels Take Series From No. 3 Tech, 13-10 Carolina's two All-America position players, who were a combined 2-for-15 in the series entering Sunday, teamed up for seven hits, five runs and five RBI in the finale. Seager and Ben Bunting, who drove in two runs, each matched career highs with four hits. Ackley, who also drove in four runs and homered twice Tuesday against Davidson, finished 3-for-5 with home runs No. 9 and 10 for the season, four RBI and three runs scored. The Walnut Cove, N.C., product now owns five career multi-homer games, including three this season. No. 7 UM Uses Long Ball to Take Series Over No. 23 FSU, 14-8 The victory secured Miami's (23-8, 10-5 ACC) second straight series win over the Florida State (18-10, 7-6 ACC), after the `Canes took two-of-three from the Seminoles last year in Tallahassee. The 14 runs scored by the `Canes on Sunday was the most UM has put up against FSU since winning 17-11 on April 10, 2004 in Tallahassee. After FSU plated a run in the top half of the first, the Hurricanes put up five runs in the bottom of the frame and another five in the second to put the game out of reach early on. No. 10 Baseball Mauls Maryland, 17-2 Tyler Wilson (So., Midlothian, Va.) made the first ACC start of his career and went 5.0 strong innings, allowing two earned runs, six hits, one walk and five walks. He earned the win and improved to 5-2 this year. The UVa bullpen was stellar as well, with Neal Davis (Jr., Baltimore, Md.), Will Roberts (Fr., Richmond, Va.), Sean Lucas (R-Fr., Fishkill, N.Y.) and Justin Thompson (Fr., Danville, Va.) combining to allow just two hits and two walks over the final four innings. #17 Tigers Take Series With 10-1 Victory Over Duke Sunday Leggett, in his 16th season as the leader of the Tiger program, upped his record at Clemson to 700-319-1. He also owns a 1,077-609-1 record in his 30th season as a college head coach. Tiger starter Chris Dwyer (3-2) pitched 6.0 effective innings to earn the win. The Swampscott, MA native allowed just four hits, one run, and no walks with five strikeouts. He allowed a triple to lead off the game, then retired the next 11 Blue Devils. He also did not allow a runner past first base after the leadoff triple. Wright tosses complete game to down Wake Forest 3-2 Wright’s nine innings pitched was the longest outing for a Tech pitcher this season, and his eight strikeouts were one shy of his career high. The Chesterfield, Va., native struck out nine batters against Bucknell earlier this season, and his other complete game came against top-ranked Miami last May. In this one, he scattered eight hits and didn’t issue a walk as he improved his record to 2-1. Reed’s first home run of the season couldn’t have come at a better time for the Hokies, as he delivered it in bottom of the eighth with the game knotted at two. He was the first batter up for the Hokies in the decisive frame, and he lined the solo shot just over the left field fence to lift the Hokies to 17-12 overall and 4-10 in the ACC. Wake Forest slipped to 17-12, with a 5-10 conference mark. Boston College's Wild Comeback Gives BC Series Win vs. NC State Down 10-9 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, sophomore Matt Hamlet chopped a grounder to the third baseman who threw it way over the first baseman's head, allowing Hamlet to get to second. The next pitch was a wild one and went all the way to the backstop. The catcher couldn't find it, though, and Hamlet scored all the way from second to tie the game. Then during the same at-bat, Sanchez blasted a home run on a full count to center give BC the dramatic game-winning run.
