![]() Baseball ACCtion: Friday, April 3
April 4, 2009
White, No. 5 Tar Heels Shut Down No. 3 Jackets, 4-2 White (5-0) went a season-best eight innings, limiting the Yellow Jackets (18-5, 8-3 ACC) to just two runs on four hits. The Greenville, N.C., product fanned eight for his fifth game with eight-plus strikeouts and issued a season-high five walks. White held Tech hitless over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings and retired 13 of the final 16 batters he faced. Colin Bates worked a scoreless ninth to nail down his fifth save and preserve White's 24th career win, which is good for a tie for seventh in school history. No. 23 Florida State Powers Past No. 7 Miami 14-4 Five different Seminoles left the park on Friday evening as Tyler Holt and Mike McGee registered two home runs a piece. Stephen Cardullo, Stuart Tapley and Jason Stidham also went yard in the win. The seven home runs were the most in a single game since June 1, 2003 when Florida State hit seven against South Alabama. After hitting 16 home runs in the first 17 games in 2009, the Seminoles have now exploded for 24 home runs in the last nine games. Holt finished the evening with a game-high four hits marking his 15th multi-hit game of the season. He tallied 11 total bases thanks to a pair of home runs, a double and a single, while tying a career-high with four RBI. No. 10 Virginia Rallies for 7-4 Win vs. Maryland Jarrett Parker (So., Stafford, Va.) and Danny Hultzen (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) each recorded four hits to lead the Cavalier offense. The four-hit night was a career high for Hultzen, while Parker earned his second four-hit game this season. Parker also scored three times. Hultzen also started on the mound for Virginia and tossed 6.2 innings, giving up four earned runs, seven hits and four walks while striking out five. UVa's bullpen pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, with Kevin Arico (So., Flemington, N.J.) earning the win and moving to 1-0 on the year after pitching 1.1 innings. Matt Packer (Jr., Germantown, Tenn.) notched his second save by hurling a perfect ninth inning. Three Homers, McKinney Lead #17 Tigers Over Duke 7-3 Friday McKinney (2-0) earned the win by allowing just four hits, one unearned run, and no walks with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched, his longest outing as a Tiger. McKinney and Tiger starter Casey Harman were aided by three groundball double plays turned by the Clemson defense. Duke starter Christopher Manno (2-4) suffered the loss, as he yielded four runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings pitched. Ben Paulsen's two-run homer in the fifth inning gave Clemson the lead for good, while Jason Stolz and Kyle Parker added solo home runs later in the game. But perhaps Clemson's most valuable position player in the game was centerfielder Addison Johnson, who was 2-for-2 with two walks and a run, as he reached base in all four of his plate appearances. Johnson had missed the previous six games due to a hamstring injury. The Tigers totaled 11 hits in all, including two doubles, one triple, and three home runs. Deacs Play Long Ball in 11-4 Win over Virginia Tech Wake Forest extended its winning streak to five games and improved its record to 16-11 and 4-9 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Hokies are now 16-11 and 3-9 in league play. The Demon Deacons flexed their muscles early in the game, belting three home runs in the first four innings of the contest. Mike Murray hit a home run in the first, while Tyler Smith added a homer in the third and Evan Ocheltree homered in the fourth.
