FSU Registers Season-High In Runs And Hits In 21-2 Victory Over Wake Forest

Winston-Salem, N.C. - Florida State (22-2, 10-0) set a season-high in runs and hits as the Seminoles remained undefeated in the ACC with a 21-2 victory over Wake Forest (11-12, 4-5) Friday afternoon at Gene Hooks Stadium. The Seminoles pounded out 21 hits in game one extending their win streak to six straight over the Demon Deacons. FSU hit five home runs against Wake Forest, including two off the bat of Buster Posey, to push the team's season total to 41.

The Seminoles scored in every odd inning and broke open a four-run ballgame with a nine-run fifth to increase their lead to 14-1. FSU hit the 20-run plateau for the first time this year with six more runs in the seventh. The last time the Garnet and Gold scored 20 or more runs in a game was against Maryland, a 20-5 victory over the Terrapins on May 5, 2007.

Four Seminoles recorded a game-high three hits. Jason Stidham went 3-for-6 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Buster Posey and Tommy Oravetz both went a perfect 3-for-3. Posey reached base in all five plate appearances recording two home runs, a double, a walk and a hit by pitch. He scored a career-high five runs while driving in three. Oravetz set a career-high with three hits, all singles.

Thompson, No. 15 Virginia Earn 10-1 Win over Virginia Tech

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Riding a complete-game seven-hitter from Jacob Thompson (Jr., Danville, Va.), the Virginia baseball team knocked off Virginia Tech, 10-1, Friday night in front of a season-high crowd of 2,157 at Davenport Field. Thompson (4-0) did not issue a walk while striking out five as he added to his school-record wins total with his 25th career victory.

Thompson was supported by 10 runs and 10 hits from the Virginia offense. Dan Grovatt (Fr., Tabernacle, N.J.), Jeremy Farrell (Jr., Westlake, Ohio) and David Coleman (Fr., Richmond, Va.) all recorded two hits, while David Adams (Jr., Margate, Fla.) hit his fourth home run of the season. Farrell and Jarrett Parker (Fr. Stafford, Va.) each drove in two runs.

Josh Wymer (2-4) took the loss for the Hokies after giving up seven runs (six earned), five hits and five walks in 4.1 innings. He struck out three.

Virginia (21-5, 6-4 ACC) scored in the opening inning on Adams' two-out solo home run, then tacked on another run in the third on a Farrell infield single to plate Adams.

Virginia Tech (8-16, 0-10) cut the lead in half in the fourth inning on a Anthony Sosnoskie grounder that scored Ty Hohman, but the Cavaliers answered with two in their half of the fourth. Tyler Cannon (So., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) singled to score Parker, and Greg Miclat (Jr., Concord, N.C.) came home on a Wymer balk.

Flack's Homer Sends No. 3 North Carolina Past Pack, 5-2

CARY, N.C. - Senior third baseman Chad Flack belted a go-ahead three-run home run in the fifth inning, and sophomore right-hander Alex White matched a career high with 11 strikeouts to send No. 3 North Carolina to a 5-2 win over NC State Friday at Cary's USA Baseball National Training Complex. The Tar Heels (21-4, 8-2 ACC) won for the 11th time in their last 12 games, while the Wolfpack (14-9, 4-5 ACC) dropped the fourth game in its last five outings.

Flack, who has driven in 16 runs in 12 career games against State over the last four years, was 2-for-3 with a single and his fourth home run of the season. Right fielder Tim Fedroff went 3-for-3 with a walk for his 12th multi-hit effort in the last 16 games to lead Carolina to its seventh straight game with 10-plus hits.

White (4-2) fanned 11 batters for the second time in as many career starts against the NC State. Over 5 2/3 innings, the Greenville, N.C., native issued a season-high five walks but limited State to just two runs on four hits, only two of which came after the second inning. Relievers Brian Moran, Colin Bates and Rob Wooten combined for 3 1/3 shutout innings, with Wooten picking up his third save. Carolina's pitchers combined for a season-high 17 strikeouts on the night.

NC State starter Clayton Shunick (2-3) also went 5 2/3 and struck out seven but allowed five runs - four earned - on nine hits and four walks. He held the Tar Heels scoreless on four hits over the first four innings, but was tagged for five runs in the fifth. Right fielder Matt Payne had two of State's five hits.

Raben's Double Lifts No. 2 UM to 7-5 Win in 10 Innings

DURHAM, N.C. - Junior right fielder Dennis Raben broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the 10th with a two-run double to right and junior right-hander Carlos Gutierrez saved his sixth game as No. 2 Miami defeated the Duke Blue Devils, 7-5, at Jack Coombs Field Friday night in game one of the Atlantic Coast Conference series. Kyle Bellamy won his second game of the week for Miami (20-2, 8-1 ACC), who extended its winning streak to seven games.

Bellamy (3-0) tossed two scoreless innings in relief of starter Chris Hernandez. He had a key strikeout with the game-winning run on second in the bottom of the ninth with one out, before inducing a pop up in foul territory to send the game into extra innings. Hernandez pitched seven innings, allowing five runs - all in the fifth inning, but struck out six and walked three. Gutierrez pitched a scoreless 10th inning.

Raben finished 2-for-5 with two two-run doubles in the game leading to four RBI. Mark Sobolewski led Miami going 3-for-5 with one RBI while Blake Tekotte ended 2-for-4 and added his 12th stolen base.

Duke reliever Michael Ness (2-1) lost for just the first time this season as he allowed two runs on three hits in three innings. He struck out four of the 14 batters he faced. Blue Devil starter Andrew Wolcott also lasted seven innings and gave up five runs on seven hits. Catcher Matt Williams went 2-for-5 and shortstop Gabriel Saade drove in a pair of runs.

Tigers Survive 2-1 Against Maryland Friday

College Park, MD - With no outs, the tying run on third base, and winning run on second base in the bottom of the ninth inning, Casey Harman and Matt Vaughn retired three straight batters without allowing a run to preserve Clemson's 2-1 win over Maryland in front of 368 fans at Shipley Field on Friday. The Tigers, who took a 1-0 series lead, improved to 17-7 overall and 5-5 in ACC play, while the Terrapins fell to 13-12 overall, 2-8 in the ACC.

The Tigers got another outstanding starting pitching performance, this time from D.J. Mitchell (3-2). The junior righthander allowed five singles, including three infield singles, one unearned run, and three walks with six strikeouts to earn the win. Harman retired both batters he faced in a crucial situation, while Vaughn picked up his eighth save of the year by retiring the last batter.

Terrapin starter Scott Swinson (3-3) pitched 6.0 solid innings, allowing six hits, two runs (one earned), and two walks with three strikeouts, but he suffered the loss.

The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Mike Freeman reached on a one-out, infield single to second base and advanced to second on Doug Hogan's groundout. Ben Paulsen then lined a single to right field. Freeman rounded third base and just beat the throw in a close play at the plate.
