![]() Smalley Comes Up Big as Seminoles Slam Akron, 12-2
March 24, 1999 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Left-hander Mike Smalley struck out a career-high nine batters for No. 1 Florida State (26-3) as the Seminoles defeated Akron (6-6), 12-2, and extended their winning streak to 12 games. Smalley (2-0) held the Zips to two runs on three hits in six innings pitched. Shortstop Brett Groves ripped a career-high four hits and scored two runs for the Seminoles, while designated-hitter John Halliday drove in two runs on two hits. The Seminoles scored early once again on Halliday's two-run double and first baseman Ryan Barthelemy's RBI-single in the first inning. Right fielder Matt Diaz walked and came home on a passed ball and Halliday singled and scored on John-Ford Griffin's basehit in the second inning as FSU made it a 5-0 ballgame. Akron right-hander Dan Wozniak (2-1) allowed five runs on six hits and five walks in 1 2/3 innings in the loss for the Zips. Second baseman Marshall McDougall extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a double in the sixth inning. Chris Chavez, Jason Hubbard and Chris Ginn each threw scoreless innings of relief for the Seminoles. Florida State will host No. 3 North Carolina for a three-game series this weekend starting at 7:00 p.m., on Friday.
