CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Chris Elmore and Ryan Earey combined on a no-hitter, allowing just three baserunners as North Carolina shutout Towson, 5-0, Tuesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Elmore and Earey allowed just two walks and a hit batsman in the game and faced the minimum 27 batters.

According to school records, it is the first no-hitter by Carolina since Greg Norris no-hit East Tennessee State on April 28, 1978. With the win, No. 3 Carolina improved to 21-2 on the season. Towson fell to 5-3.

Elmore (2-0), making just his second start of the season, was perfect through 6.0 innings before hitting Towson leadoff hitter Nick Agoglia with a pitch and being removed from the game because he had reached his pitch count. Elmore struck out three and didn't allow a baserunner until hitting Agoglia.

Earey pitched the final 3.0 innings to pick up his second save of the year, walking two and striking out three. Wayne Feuerherd (0-1) took the loss for Towson, allowing four earned runs and six hits in 5.0 innings.

Carolina's eight-hit attack was led by Earey, who went 2-for-3 and hit a two-run home run. Clay Hooper, Jarrett Shearin and Chris Maples also had RBI for UNC.

Carolina scored four runs in the top of the first and cruised behind the strong pitching of Elmore and Earey the rest of the way. Dan Moylan led off the bottom of the first with a double to left-centerfield and scored on an RBI single by Hooper. Hooper then stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Shearin. Tyrell Godwin followed with a single and scored when Earey crushed a home run to left field.

The Tar Heels added a run in the eighth on two hit batters, a walk and a sacrifice fly.

Carolina and Towson return to action Wednesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium at 3:00 p.m. The Tar Heels journey to play at No. 1 Florida State Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
