![]() Georgia Tech Outlasts Kent, 13-12
March 21, 1999 ATLANTA - Mark Teixeira and Bryan Prince delivered key runs-scoring hits to snap a 10-10 tie in the eighth inning, and 10th-ranked Georgia Tech survived an 18-hit assault by Kent to outlast the Golden Flashes, 13-12, Sunday at Russ Chandler Stadium. Tech (18-6) accumulated 17 hits of its own in taking the weekend series finale, with Teixeira and Prince contributing three hits and three RBI each. Kent, which got four hits apiece from Dave Mattle and Les Brock, fell to 4-7. The Jackets erased an 8-4 deficit with six runs in the sixth inning, keyed by Teixeira's two-run double and a two-run single from Jason Basil. Kent tied the game at 10-10 in the eighth on a single by Mattle and a Tech error, but the Jackets' broke the tie in the bottom half after their first five batters reached base against Kent reliever Ben Galbreath. Teixeira broke the tie with a two-run double, his third double of the day to tie a Tech record, and Basil added a run-scoring single to make the score 13-10. Kent wasn't through, however, scoring twice in the ninth on four hits, including an RBI double by Cary Zamilski and a sacrifice fly by Jess Bechard to make the score 13-12. Tech reliever Rhett Parrott then struck out Casey Ellis and got Mattle to pop up, stranding the tying and go-ahead runs on base. Parrott (3-1) got the win despite allowing five runs on eight hits over the final 4-2/3 innings. Galbreath (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in 1-1/3 innings. Kent built a 6-1 lead early, with Alex Marconi's three-run double capping a five-run fourth for the Golden Flashes. After Eric McQueen's three-run homer in the bottom half of the fourth brought Tech within 6-4, Kent scored on a bases-loaded walk in the fifth and a sacrifice fly from Ellis in the sixth.
