Hultzen, Cavaliers Shut Down Boston College, 7-1
Behind another sterling pitching performance from Danny Hultzen (So., Bethesda, Md.), the top-ranked Virginia baseball team downed Boston College, 7-1, Friday night in front of a season-high crowd of 2,923 at Davenport Field.

Hultzen (4-1) worked a career-high eight innings and gave up just one earned run, three hits and one walk while striking out 12. Shane Halley (So., Burke, Va.) fired a scoreless ninth inning to wrap up the game.

Every Virginia starting position player recorded at least one hit and UVa finished with 11 hits. Jarrett Parker (Jr., Stafford, Va.) and Phil Gosselin (Jr., West Chester, Pa.) each had a pair of hits for UVa. Tyler Cannon (Sr., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) stretched his hitting streak to 10 games with a second-inning double.

Late Inning Rally Paces Noles
Fourth-ranked Florida State (14-3, 2-2 ACC) erased a three-run deficit with a little late inning heroics to claim a 4-3 victory over 17th-ranked North Carolina (14-5, 1-3 ACC) Friday night inside Boshamer Stadium. The Seminoles scored two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to get back to .500 in league play on the year.

For the third time in the last four meetings between these two schools, Florida State used a ninth inning comeback to claim victory. In fact, this series has been so closely contested that 14 of the last 27 games have been decided by one run with the Seminoles winning 11 of those games.


 

 

With the Seminoles trailing 3-2 entering the ninth, Justin Gonzalez got things going with a one out base hit back up the middle. He would score all the way from first for the game tying run on a double to the gap in right center off the bat of Jayce Boyd. UNC put together a nice relay combination to have a play at the plate, but Gonzalez slid in safely as Tar Heel catcher Jacob Stalling could not hold on to the ball for the out.

Harman, Haselden Pitch #7 Clemson Past Virginia Tech 3-0 Friday
Casey Harman and David Haselden combined on a one-hit shutout in #7 Clemson's 3-0 win over Virginia Tech in front of 3,862 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Friday night. Clemson, who took a 1-0 series lead, improved to 15-2 overall and 4-0 in the ACC. With Georgia Tech's loss at Maryland on Friday night, Clemson became the last unbeaten team in ACC play. The Hokies dropped to 13-6 overall and 2-2 in the ACC.

Harman (4-0) earned the win by tying his career high with 7.1 innings pitched. He allowed just one hit, a single in the sixth inning, no runs, and three walks with four strikeouts. David Haselden pitched the final 1.2 innings without allowing a hit or run to record his first career save. The two Tiger hurlers tossed the one-hit shutout against a team that entered the game with a batting average of .354 and was averaging over nine runs per game.

Hokie starter Justin Wright (2-3) was nearly as unhittable despite suffering the loss. In 5.2 innings pitched, he yielded just two hits, two runs, and a career-high five walks with six strikeouts.

Hernandez Tosses Complete Game as No. 11 UM Edges Duke
Junior left-hander Chris Hernandez tossed his first career complete game Friday night as the 11th-ranked University of Miami baseball team picked up a 3-1 win over Duke at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Hernandez (2-2), whose previous career-high of eight innings came twice during his freshman year in 2008, allowed just the one run on two hits while walking one and striking out six to earn his second win of the campaign. The complete game was the first for Miami since David Gutierrez tossed one against Jacksonville in the 2009 NCAA Gainesville Regional.

Miami improved to 12-5 overall and 3-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play with the win while the Blue Devils fell to 12-5 overall and 2-2 in league play.

Maryland Upsets No. 3 Georgia Tech, 5-2
Senior Dan Gentzler hit two home runs off reigning ACC Pitcher of the Year Deck McGuire and Brett Harman delivered his second consecutive splendid start on the mound as the University of Maryland baseball team upset No. 3 Georgia Tech, 5-2, Friday evening at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium at Shipley Field in the first game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series.

The victory improved Maryland's record to 8-9 and 2-2 in the ACC, while Georgia Tech dropped to 14-2 and 3-1 in conference play. The 5-2 triumph came nearly two years to the day since the Terps' last win against a top-five team. Maryland defeated then-No. 3 North Carolina, 4-2, March 21, 2008.

The Terps jumped on the Yellow Jackets in the bottom half of the first inning thanks to a fielding miscue. Alfredo Rodriguez reached second with one out when shortstop Derek Dietrich dropped a routine pop-up. With two outs, Brandon Padula drew a walk to put runners on the corners for Gentzler.

NC State Thumps Wake Forest 17-6
For a game that lasted more than three hours, this one was over pretty quickly. NC State scored four in the first inning and five more in the ninth Friday before coasting to a 17-6 victory in the opening game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series vs. Wake Forest.

The win was NC State’s first in ACC play after being swept at Clemson a week ago. The Wolfpack improved to 13-5 overall. Wake Forest remained winless in conference play and fell to 6-13 overall.

The Wolfpack jumped on Wake starter Michael Dimock (1-3) early and often. Kyle Wilson and Dallas Poulk led off the top of the first inning with walks. With one down, Pratt Maynard hit a routine grounder to first base that Austin Stadler stabbed at and missed for an error. Wilson scored on the error and Poulk went all the way to third. Danny Canela walked to load the bases, and Drew Poulk made it 3-0 with a two-run single through the left side of the infield. John Gianis’s RBI single to right field scored the final run of the inning.
