BC Baseball Beats Northeastern In Extras, 6-5

The Boston College baseball team went down early, 5-0, but the bullpen was strong and the Eagles scored six unanswered runs to take a 6-5 win from Northeastern on Tuesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.

Junior Mike Belfiore threw a career-high 3.2 innings of two-hit baseball and picked up his first win of the season. He struck out seven of the 11 outs he recorded which was also a personal best. Sophomore Kevin Moran shut down the Huskies after they had scored their five runs. He worked a career-high 6.0 innings and allowed just two hits.

Junior Tony Sanchez went 3-for-4 on the day with a double while Belfiore and freshman Brad Zapenas both went 2-for-5. Belfiore drove in a pair of runs as well. Junior Barry Butera also had two hits on the day.

Wake Forest Sweeps Season Series With 3-1 Win over Appalachian State

Michael Dimock allowed just one run in 6 2/3 innings pitched to pick up the first win of his collegiate career as Wake Forest downed Appalachian State 3-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Smith Stadium.

Dimock threw the best outing of his collegiate career, allowing just one run on six hits in 6 2/3 innings to pick up his first win as a Demon Deacon. He struck out five and walked two. Nick Daniels suffered the loss, giving up a run on two hits in 2 2/3 innings. Zach White picked up the first save of his collegiate career, throwing 2 1/3 hitless innings and striking out two.

Weldon Woodall had a team-high two hits, including his third home run of the season. Austin Stadler also drove in a run for the Deacs. Mike Murray tied a career high with three walks.

No. 1 Tar Heels Use Long Ball To Down Princeton, 17-0

Freshman Seth Baldwin connected on two of No. 1 North Carolina's season-best five home runs, and the Tar Heels' pitching staff carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning Tuesday in a 17-0 win over Princeton at Boshamer Stadium. Baldwin took advantage of his first career start with a single-game high six RBI for Carolina this season.

Baldwin, who was 4-for-5 with four runs scored and the six RBI, singled in the second, doubled in the fifth, belted a grand slam in the sixth and connected on solo homer in the eighth. Greg Holt, Dustin Ackley and Levi Michael also homered.

Ben Bunting was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, Michael was 2-for-4 with four RBI, and Ackley was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Mark Fleury, Ryan Graepel and Mike Cavasinni each added two hits, as the Tar Heels (15-2) matched their season-best with 20 hits and scored a season-high 17 runs.

Clutch ABs Push No. 14 Baseball to 5-4 Win over Marshall

The No. 14 Virginia baseball team stretched its school-record winning streak to 16 games with a 5-4 win over Marshall Tuesday afternoon at Davenport Field. In contrast to the majority of the wins in the streak, this victory came by virtue of a seventh-inning rally with the Cavaliers scoring four times with two out to come back from a 4-1 deficit.

The Cavaliers' 16-game winning streak is the longest active win streak in the country, and UVa remains the only undefeated team in Division I this year.

Tyler Cannon (Jr., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two stolen bases for Virginia. Danny Hultzen (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) added two hits, while Dan Grovatt (So., Tabernacle, N.J.) had a hit to extend his hitting streak this season to 16 games. He also has an 18-game streak dating to last season.

Virginia reliever Matt Packer (Jr., Germantown, Tenn.) pitched three innings to earn his first win of 2009. Kevin Arico (So., Flemington, N.J.) tossed two scoreless innings to earn his first career save.

Hokies use 23 hits to put away VMI

The Virginia Tech baseball team pounded out a season-high 23 hits on its way to a 14-5 beating of VMI on Tuesday evening at English Field.

Eleven different Hokies recorded at least one hit in the contest, while seven had at least two. Right fielder Austin Wates (Richmond, Va..) led the way with a career-best five hits in six at bats, while designated hitter Buddy Sosnoskie (Front Royal, Va.) and center fielder Steve Bumbry (Cockeysville, Md.) each tallied three base knocks apiece.

Tech improved to 11-6 with the win and has now scored in double figures in 10 games - all of which were victories. The Keydets dropped to 8-9 with the loss.

Bumbry and left fielder Steve Domecus (Novato, Calif.) teamed up to put Tech on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. Bumbry lined a double to left-center field with one out and then scored when Domecus smashed a two-out triple to left.

Jackets Toss Two-Hitter to Down Kennesaw State, 11-0

Zach Von Tersch, Jed Bradley and Brandon Cumpton combined to hold Kennesaw State (7-7) to just two hits as Georgia Tech (13-1) defeated the Owls, 11-0, Tuesday night at Stillwell Stadium.

The win was the Yellow Jackets' 10th in a row, and it was the first two-hitter tossed by the Yellow Jacket pitching staff since the 2007 season.

The Tech trio faced just three over the minimum in the nine-inning game, allowing only two singles and a walk while combining to strike out 13 Owl batters.

Von Tersch (4-0) made the start on a designated staff day and struck out three in two innings of work to pick up his fourth win of the season.

No. 4 Miami Eases Past St. Thomas, 8-0

Freshman starter Daniel Miranda tossed six scoreless innings to earn his first career win and junior shortstop Ryan Jackson hit his first two homers of the season as the fourth-ranked University of Miami baseball team eased past cross-town foe St. Thomas, 8-0, Tuesday night at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.

Making his third start of the season, Miranda (1-1) allowed just four hits while striking out five in keeping Bobcats off the board in a career-long outing. Rudman earned his first career save and the team's first three-inning save of the season, holding the Bobcats hitless while striking out three in the final three frames. Miranda and Rudman combined to retire STU in order from the fourth inning on.

Cartwright, NC State Ground Eagles, 8-4

Devon Cartwright went 2-for-4 with a double, a sacrifice fly, three RBIs and two runs scored to push NC State past North Carolina Central 8-4 Tuesday night at Doak Field at Dail Park.

With the win, the Wolfpack improves to 10-8, while the Eagles fall to 3-7. Righthander Mike Russo (1-0) took the win after giving up four runs, only one earned, on three hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. He also walked just one and struck out five. Jason Zinser added 3 2/3 innings of one-hit baseball and struck out seven to earn his first save of the season. Jeff Citero (1-2) was tagged with the loss for NCCU after allowing four hits and five runs, one earned, on 3 1/3 innings of work. He walked five and struck out three.

#18 Tigers Blank Blue Hose 8-0 Tuesday

Graham Stoneburner, Will Lamb, and Craig Gullickson combined to pitch a five-hit shutout in #18 Clemson's 8-0 win over Presbyterian at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Tuesday night. The Tigers, who won their sixth game in a row, improved to 12-4, while the Blue Hose dropped to 2-13. It was the first meeting between the two teams at Clemson since 1950 and the first-ever meeting at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Stoneburner (2-2) tossed 6.0 innings, allowing just two hits and one walk with seven strikeouts to earn the win. Lamb pitched 2.0 scoreless innings, then Gullickson closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning. Blue Hose starter Will Freeman (0-1) suffered the loss, as he allowed five runs on six hits in 6.2 innings pitched.

Florida State Comes Up Short, Falls To Florida 5-4

Seventeenth-ranked Florida State (9-7) fell to 25th-ranked Florida (10-7) 5-4 Tuesday evening at Alfred McKethan Stadium. The Seminole fought back from two runs down in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as the Gators plated the winning run on a Buddy Munroe walk-off single to deep right center in the bottom of the inning.

With the Seminoles trailing by two runs heading into the ninth, Florida State tied the game on an RBI ground rule double by Tommy Oravetz and a sacrifice fly RBI by Jason Stidham. The first four batters to the plate in the ninth reached on three consecutive hits and a walk off Patrick Keating. With the bases loaded, the Gators turned to Tony Davis (1-0). After giving up the sac-fly to Stidham, the Florida reliever registered a strikeout from Ohmed Danesh and fly out to right by Stephen Cardullo to keep the game tied at four.

Maryland Baseball Loses Tuesday Matchup at Old Dominion, 10-6

Trailing 10-1 entering the ninth inning, the University of Maryland baseball team mounted a furious rally, putting the tying run on deck, but it was too little, too late, as the Terrapins dropped a 10-6 game Tuesday evening at Old Dominion University. It was the first of a two-game home-and-home with the Monarchs this week.

After retiring the first two batters in the bottom of the first inning, Maryland starting pitcher Adam Kolarek struggled to get the third out. Gerald Hall legged out an infield single to shortstop and a walk put two runners on with two outs.
