![]() Baseball ACCtion: Saturday, March 7
March 7, 2009
No. 2 Tar Heels Tame No. 18 Tigers, 5-2 Warren (2-0) held the Tigers to three hits and two walks and did not allow an earned run over a season-best seven innings. The New Bern product struck out eight for the second straight start before Colin Bates nailed down the win with a six-out save, the first of his career. Michael went 3-for-5 with a run and a double, and Kyle Seager was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI for Carolina (9-2, 1-1 ACC). Boston College Evens Series With No. 6 Florida State With 14-6 Win It was the program's first win against Florida State and first victory against a team ranked in the top 10 since April 30, 2006. Sanchez finished 4-for-6 on the day and a triple shy of the cycle. He hit his fourth home run of the season and also knocked a pair of doubles. He drove in three runs and scored three times himself. No. 9 Georgia Tech Hits Five Home Runs as Jackets Rout Terps, 24-3 The Yellow Jackets gave starter Zach Von Tersch (3-0) plenty of run support, and the junior righty picked up his third win in as many starts this season. Tech plated 10 runs for the third time in 2009, with all three of those games coming with Von Tersch on the mound. The 24 runs were the most scored by the Yellow Jackets since March 3, 2006, when Tech defeated Rutgers, 25-8, and the most scored in an ACC game since the Jackets defeated Virginia Tech, 27-2, on May 14, 2005. No. 8 Miami Takes Series From NC State Behind Gutierrez Gutierrez (2-0), who was named Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday after tossing seven scoreless innings in a 2-1 win at No. 12 Florida last weekend, allowed just three hits while extending his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 13 straight. Gutierrez struck out four and walked five, but timely pitching and solid defense kept the Wolfpack off the board all night. Freshman Daniel Miranda relieved Gutierrez in the seventh and tossed two scoreless before junior Taylor Wulf came on the ninth to finish the game. Blue Devils Bounce Back With 5-4 Win Over Hokies Lemmerman’s hit was a slow roller up the middle with runners at the corners that Virginia Tech second baseman Tony Balisteri could do little with besides knock it down to keep it in front of him. The base knock scored Duke junior Jeremy Gould from third base after the Blue Devil three-hitter started the rally with a double for his fourth hit of the ballgame. It was the second hit and RBI of the game for Lemmerman, who also reached with an RBI double in the third inning for one of Duke’s four extra-base knocks in the contest. Gould, Alex Hassan and Nate Freiman also doubled in the game. Virginia Holds Off Wake Forest, 8-6 Virginia withstood a home run barrage from the Demon Deacons, who swatted four homers in the contest. UVa got one of its own from Jarrett Parker (So., Stafford, Va.), who went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. For the second straight night, every Virginia starter recorded at least one hit. UVa had 16 hits in the contest and now has 36 in the two games of the series. Phil Gosselin (So., West Chester, Pa.) and John Hicks (Fr., Sandy Hook, Va.) each had three hits for Virginia. Hicks also added three RBI. Tyler Cannon (Jr., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) followed up his 5-for-5 effort on Friday night with two hits on Saturday.
