The Virginia Cavaliers cross country team, ranked #14 in the nation, accepted a bid to the NCAA Cross Country Championships, which will be held at Furman University on November 19. The appearance at the NCAA Championships is the fourth such trip for Virginia, who previously went in 1981, 1982, and 1993. The Cavaliers won the title in both 1981 and 1982 and finished 17th in 1993. In 1981, Virginia set the record that still stands today for the lowest aggregate score (36). Incidentally that title was the first for any women's team under the auspices of the NCAA.

The Cavaliers are led by 1999 All-American Jennifer Owens, who finished third at the NCAA southeast regional on Saturday, Nov. 10. Close behind her was Sarah Folse, who finished 8th on the same course that will host the NCAA meet. Meg McGarvey was also an All-Region performer with her 17th-place finish at the race.

On the men's side, Walton Kingsbery will represent the Cavaliers as an at-large selection. Kingsbery finished 13th at the regional meet, good enough for a bid.
