Blue Devils Take Second At NCAA Championships

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Paced by Sally Meyerhoff's 11th-place finish, the No. 5 Blue Devils finished second at the 2004 NCAA Championships Monday at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course hosted by Indiana State to cap off the best season in school history. Meyerhoff, who also led the team to its first ACC Championship, finished the 5K race in 20:50 to earn All-America honors. Also achieving All-America status were Shannon Rowbury who finished 19th in 21:05 and Clara Horowitz (21st, 21:07), who led the team at this year's Southeast Regional Championship. By winning the Southeast Regional, the team received an automatic bid to the national championships. No. 3 Colorado took first in the face off the strength of three top 10 finishers, while No. 2 Providence, No. 6 Notre Dame and No. 1 Stanford rounded out the top five teams, respectively. Stanford, who the Blue Devils topped by nearly 30 points, was ranked No. 1 in each of the FinishLynx National Polls this season. Providence, meanwhile, sat second to the Cardinals all season before being topped by Duke. Duke's Nick Schneider, who received an individual bid to the NCAA Championships, finished in 99th-place out of 242 runners in 32:33.1 in the five-mile race.
