Megesi, Mills Lead Georgia Tech Cross Country At ACC Championships

ATLANTA - Georgia Tech's men's cross country team placed sixth Monday in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship meet, while the women's team placed seventh overall. The championship event was hosted the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The men's team was led by senior captain Brad Mills (Toledo, Ohio), who placed 13th in a time of 25:25.0 over the 8,000 meter course. He was followed by senior Giovanni Pipia (Acworth, Ga.), who was 33rd in 26:29.9, junior Joey Zins (Atlanta, Ga.), who was 36th in 26:48.7, junior Brent Johnson (Fayetteville, Ga.), who was 38th in 26:50.5, and senior Brent Williams (Farmington, Mo.), who was 42nd in 26:54.6. NC State won its fifth consecutive title with jut 16 points, by claiming the first four spots in the individual race to win the title. Chan Pons won the individual title with a time of 24:19.4.

The women's team was paced by senior captain Becky Megesi (Jonesboro, Ga.), who finished 12th in a time of 18:10.9 over the 5,000 meter course. She was followed by junior Sara Pardue (Aurora, Colo.), who was 30th in a time of 18:57.4, junior Amy Edwards (Marietta, Ga.), who was 37th in a time of 19:07.1, junior Rachael Caruso (Duluth, Ga.), who was 43rd in 19:24.0, and freshman Katie Griffin (Charlotte, N.C.), who was 45th in 19:40.8. North Carolina edged NC State for the women's championship 44-56, which snapped a streak of four consecutive titles by the Wolfpack. NC State's Christy Nichols won the individual title in a time of 17:11.8.

Both Megesi and Mills each missed placing in the top 10 to claim all-ACC honors by less than 13 seconds each.

Tech will next be in action November 13 at the NCAA District IX Championship event at Auburn, Ala. The top two teams and four individuals in each respective division will advance to the NCAA Championship November 22 in Bloomington, Ind.
