BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Duke harrier teams swept the men's and
women's titles at the Second Annual Campbell European Cross Country
Invitational on Saturday. The Blue Devils men's team scored 27 points
to take first-place honors ahead of host Campbell (40 points) and
Winthrop (59 points), while the Duke women scored 31 points in their
victory over Winthrop (36 points) and Campbell (54 points).
Junior Kyle Leonard (New Lenox, Ill.) was Duke's top finisher covering
the five-mile course in a time of 25:37 for third place. Teammate
freshman Jeremy Block (Mantius, N.Y.) crossed the line behind Leonard in
a time of 25:43 for fourth place. The Blue Devils also placed three
other individuals in the top 10. Freshman Adam Perez (San Carlos,
Calif.) took fifth place (25:46), while freshmen Jay Champi (Cumberland,
R.I.), Brendan Wells (San Anselmo, Calif.) and Jim Martin (Charlotte,
N.C.) finished sixth (25:49), ninth (26:22), and 10th (26:28),
respectively.
Sophomore Beth O'Donnell (Pittsfield, Mass.) captured the women's
individual crown by completing the five-kilometer course in a time of
18:48. O'Donnell was followed by teammate Melissa Malakoff (Bayshore,
N.Y.) who posted a third-place time of 18:53. Freshman Elizabeth
Kruel-Starr (Raleigh, N.C.) and senior Kim Reynolds (Mill Valley,
Calif.) rounded out the Blue Devil top 10 finishers with fourth (18:55)
and ninth (19:29) place finishes, respectively.
Duke's next competition is October 16 when the men's squad competes in
the IC4A Championships and the women's team participates in the ECAC
Championships. Both competitions will take place in New York City's Van
Cortland Park.
