WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's and women's cross country
teams both finished in first place at the Wake Forest Invitational on
Saturday, their lone home meet of the 1998 season.
The women's squad, which is ranked 6th in the nation, finished in
first place among the six teams competing after tallying 19 points. UNC
Asheville finished second with 78 points while Delaware placed third with
98 points.
The squad was led by All-American junior Janelle Kraus, who claimed
the individual title after clearing the 5,000 meter course in a
personal-best time of 17:01. Kraus has now captured the individual title in
each of the squad's first four races of the season and owns a school-record
eight career titles.
The Demon Deacons finished the race by claiming seven of the top
eight spots in the event. Junior Emily Selvidio placed third with a time
of 17:54, while Jill Snyder, Kelly Brady, Becky Pollock, Allison Anibaldi
and Amy Wallace took places four through eight.
The men's team finished first among five teams competing after
totaling 37 points. East Tennessee State finished second with 43 points and
East Carolina placed third with 47 points.
Wake Forest's Steve Trezvant placed second with a personal best
time of 25:31.77 to pace the Demon Deacon runners. ETSU's Zack Whitmarsh
won the 8,000 meter event with a time of 25:13.13.
Matt Shady (6th), Josh Buffolino (8th), Joe DeGutis (9th) and Matt
Altieri (10th) all posted top 10 finishes to lead the Deacs to their first
team title in 1998.
The men's and women's cross country teams will return to action on
Saturday, October 17 at the North Carolina Intercollegiate in Greenville,
N.C.
