COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland's cross country teams both took first place at the Maryland Invitational on Saturday.
The women's team achieved a perfect score of 15 in the 5,000 meters in beating American (60 points) and Howard (67). The first six finishers were all Terps. Sophomore Aimee Phillippi (Waldorf, Md.) took first place with a time of 19:41.40. She was followed by sophomore Kelly Crowley (Levittown, Penn.) in 19:51.90, sophomore Rebecca Mack (Wilkes-Barre, Penn.) in 20:12.90, and sophomore Lisa DeGrechie (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) in 20:28.00.
The men's team accumulated a score of 26 points in the 8,000 meters, which was enough to defeat the Howard Bisons (second place with a score of 51) and the American Eagles (third with 55 points).
The team was propelled by strong performances by junior Faisal Hasan (Columbia, Md.) and senior Matt Green (Etna, N.H.). Hasan took first place overall with a time of 26:12.91. Green was right behind him in second place with a time of 26:20.35. Other top Maryland finishers included junior Steve Hedgespeth (Baltimore, Md.) who took sixth in 27:24.96, and freshman Shawn Sullivan (Timonium, Md.) who finished eighth in 28:10.14.
