Tech Men Capture First Win of '98 at Georgia State Invitational

ATLANTA - Georgia Tech's men's cross country team captured its first victory of the season as it won the Georgia State Invitational on Saturday in Atlanta. The women's team finished third in the event that was held at the Georgia Regional Hospital grounds.

Tech sophomore Phillip Gable (Kennesaw, Ga.) took fourth in 26:04 and senior Kevin Betts (Eufaula, Ga.) placed fifth in 26:08 in Division I competition to pace the Yellow Jackets in the 5-mile race. Senior Brian Hetherington (Gaithersburg, Md.) placed 15th and he was followed by junior Brad Mills (Toledo, Ohio), who was 18th and junior Dan Brin (Lawrenceville, Ga.), who was 21st.

The women's team placed third behind the top-5 finishes of Becky Megesi and Judy Johnson. Megesi, a junior from Jonesboro, Ga., ran the 5-mile course in 18:30 to place second among Division I competitors. Johnson, a senior from Snellville, Ga., finished in 18:34 to place third. Junior Tina Frey (Peachtree City, Ga.) ran a mark of 19:25 to finish 11th for the Yellow Jackets. Sophomore Carolyn Krieger (Marietta, Ga.) was 27th in a time of 20:05 and redshirt-freshman Rachael Caruso (Duluth, Ga.) was 35th in a mark of 20:09.

The Yellow Jackets will next be in action on Oct. 3, when both teams will attempt to defend their titles in the Georgia Intercollegiate championships, which will also be run at the Georgia Regional Hospital course.
