![]() Duke Gets Season Off on Right Foot
September 13, 1998 Bronx, N.Y. - The Duke cross country squads opened the 1998 season by sweeping the men's and women's divisions of the Fordham Invitational at New York's Van Cortland Park on Saturday. The Blue Devil men took first with a total of 19 points, while the Duke women captured top honors with a score of 36 points.
Duke's top male finisher was sophomore Terry Brennan (Lake Forest, Ill.), who covered the course in a time of 25:47 for first-place honors. The Blue Devils captured four of the top five spots with sophomore Brendan Fitzgibbon (San Francisco, Calif.) taking third (26:10), junior Charlie Kelly (Marshalltown, Iowa) finishing fourth (26:13) and junior Tim Schaefer placing fifth (26:15). Freshman Sean Kelly (Wickcliffe, Ohio) posted a 26:26 time win the men's freshmen race.
Sophomore Megan Sullivan (Williamsburg, Va.) was the Blue Devils top runner in the women's division with a 18:35 clocking for a second-place finish. Sophomore Ellie Culp (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Katie Atlas (Johnson, N.Y) crossed the line in fifth and sixth, respectively, with times of 18:00 and 19:05.
The Blue Devil cross country teams return to action on Saturday, Sept.
19, when they host Liberty in a dual meet on Duke's East Campus.
