Jones Takes Long Jump Crown on Day Five
July 16, 2004 Marion Jones' jump of 23'4" in her second attempt of the day Thursday at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials held up for four more rounds, giving her the women's long jump title and a trip to Athens. Jones, who failed to qualify in the 100-meter dash, will now turn her attention to the 200-meter dash that begins Friday evening. Former Tar Heel Ola Sesay, who led the event during the qualifying round, finished ninth with a leap of 20'11.25". In other women's action, a pair of former Carolina standouts advanced to the finals of the 400-meter dash. Monique Hennagan and Crystal Cox both ran in the first heat, finishing third and fourth, respectively. Hennagan's time of 50.59 was the fourth-fastest overall, while Cox's 51.23 was sixth-best. The 400m final is set for Saturday afternoon. Current UNC thrower Laura Gerraughty also advanced to a weekend final, as she had the second-best preliminary toss in the women's shot put. Her heave of 58'3" was only seven inches behind leader Kristen Heaston, and almost three feet ahead of Jillian Camarena's third-best mark. The shot put final is scheduled for Friday night.
On the men's side, Adam Shunk, who won an NCAA title while at Carolina, finished in a tie for 11th in the high jump preliminaries. His jump of 7'2.5" places him in Sunday's final. Tar Heel triple jumper Daniel Harris failed to make the finals in his event after fouling in his three attempts.
