2012 All-ACC Academic Men's Outdoor Track & Field Team Announced

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Florida State's Gonzalo Barroilhet has been recognized as the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, announced today by the conference office. Barroilhet highlights the 2012 All-ACC Academic Men's Outdoor Track & Field Team. A graduate student working on his MBA, Barroilhet won five of the 10 events to capture the 2012 ACC Outdoor Decathlon title with a meet-record 8,065 points. At the NCAA Championship, he finished fourth - just four points out of second place - to earn All-America First Team honors. Over the course of the 2012 outdoor season he registered personal-best marks in all 10 decathlon events. Barroilhet was also the 2012 indoor ACC pole vault champion. A native of Santiago, Chile, Barroilhet holds the Chilean national record in the decathlon and will represent his nation at the 2102 Olympic Games, his second appearance at the Olympics. This is his sixth All-ACC Academic Team honor between indoor and outdoor seasons, the first Florida State athlete to reach that mark. He is a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American. 17 selections to the All-ACC Academic Team are repeat honorees. Florida State's Michael Fout, Virginia Tech's Alexander Ziegler, Hasheem Halim, and Matthias Treff, and Wake Forest's Paul Loeser earned their third career recognition. Virginia Tech and Duke led all ACC schools with seven athletes on the team, followed by Florida State with six and Virginia and NC State with four. Three athletes from Wake Forest were honored and were by joined two from Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Maryland, and Clemson and one from Miami. To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career. The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award was established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the award must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
