GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference released the 2007 All-ACC Academic Women's Track & Field team announced Friday by Commissioner John D. Swofford. All 12 league schools are represented on the honors team.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career. This year's team is comprised of 24 All-Conference performers, seven ACC individual champions and seven All-Americans.
ACC Champion Virginia Tech led all league schools with nine honorees on the women's academic squad, while Duke had seven selections and Virginia six. The Hokies, who captured their first ever ACC Women's Outdoor Track and Field title this past April, are led by a pair of All-American hurdlers Queen Harrison and ACC Freshman of the Year Kristi Castlin.
Wake Forest's Michelle Sikes capped a brilliant senior season by winning the national championship in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The ACC Track MVP, Sikes clocked a 15:16.76, setting a new NCAA meet record, breaking Stanford's Lauren Fleshman's time of 15:24.06 by more than 15 seconds. The Lakewood, Ohio native became the first Wake Forest female to win a national title in track, including both indoor and outdoor and is the first Demon Deacon to claim a title in the sport since Andy Bloom won the discus throw and shot put in 1996.
In addition to Harrison, Castlin and Sikes, other ACC student-athletes who earned All-American honors this past year were Duke's Liz Wort and Maddie McKeever, Florida State's Kandia Batchelor and Keyla Smith, Georgia Tech's Ashlee Kidd and Virginia's Katie Read.
