April 24, 2012
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia Tech’s Dave Cianelli has been named the ACC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year, and Clemson’s Lawrence Johnson is the ACC Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year, announced Tuesday by the league office.
Cianelli led the Virginia Tech men to their first ACC Outdoor Championship, as the Hokies held off defending champion Florida State and clinching the title on the final race of the meet. The Hokies won five gold medals and garnered 14 All-ACC accolades en route to the 4.5 point victory. This is the second Men’s Outdoor Coach of the Year honor for Cianelli, who also won it in 2010.
Johnson, the two-time defending Women’s Outdoor Coach of the Year, guided Clemson to their third straight ACC title and won by the largest margin of victory in the meet since 1994. In total, Tigers won nine events and had 17 All-ACC finishes, and are now ranked No. 1 in the country for the first time in program history. Johnson has won every ACC Women’s Coach of the Year award in the past three years between indoor and outdoor competition.
