April 10, 2012
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida State seniors Maurice Mitchell and Michelle Jenije have been named the ACC Track & Field Performers of the Week, announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Mitchell posted the nation’s top time (20.08) with his victory in the 200-meter dash at the 68th Pepsi Florida Relays. Despite a 3.4 mph aiding win, the Kansas City, Mo., native blew away the competition, which included top 10-ranked opponents Isiah Young (Ole Miss) and Kind Butler (Indiana), as well as All-American sprinters Jeff Demps, Brandon Byram, Horatio Williams and Torrin Lawrence. In the process, the 2011 NCAA 200-meter champion posted the second-fastest all-conditions time in the World this year.
Jenije earned her second triple jump victory in as many meets during the 2012 outdoor season, capturing the win at the 68th Pepsi Florida Relays. Jenije, who came into the meet on the heels of her nation-leading jump and win at the Texas Relays, leaped 13.33m (43-9) to edge Clemson’s April Sinkler by a half-inch. The native of Tallahassee, Fla., has competed in seven events – indoors and outdoors – during her final season and the Florida Relays triumph was her fourth victory. She has finished second in three other competitions, including the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships.
