Mattie Bethea Jacoby Ford
What is something that most people don't know about you?
I am actually a shy person. I might not seem like it in certain settings, but I'm really pretty shy.

What got you started with track?
(One of) my teachers was my coach and every day when I'd go to class he'd harass me about coming out for track.

When did you realize you could compete in college?
My sophomore year of high school. I didn't do track until my freshman year of high school. By my sophomore year, I was actually beating people.

Did you play any other sports in high school?
I played basketball. I played basketball all of my life and I thought that was the path (in college) that I was going to take. NC State is where I wanted to go and when they started calling me I pretty much made up my mind that I would go with track.

What made NC State such an easy choice for you?
I liked what I saw on my visit and I knew I wanted to stay somewhat close to home.

What is your favorite thing to do in Raleigh?
I really like to go to the movies.

How have you changed since your freshman year, both athletically and personally?
Athletically I've gotten a lot stronger. Athletically and personally I've gotten much more independent, thinking for myself.

What is your biggest accomplishment away from athletics?
Just growing up and doing what I've done. I'm going to graduate in May.

What is your most memorable moment during your time at NC State?
My first home meet. That was pretty exciting. A lot of my friends on campus came to watch me.

Who is your most influential role model?
My mother. She is the ideal woman, like Superwoman. She, along with my family, raised me. She's been the rock in my life.

What is the best advice a coach has ever given you?
Stop thinking so much and just jump!

What do you like more - the jumps or the hurdles?
My favorite event is the high jump. It is where I started off and I have progressed a lot. It is exciting to see the changes I've made. And it's fun, just to throw yourself in the air and over the bar (laughs).

What are your goals for the rest of the season?
To win (the ACC Championship). Also I want to PR, to beat myself and do the best I've ever done.

What is something that most people don't know about you?
I like to watch cartoons. My favorite cartoon is Rugrats.

When did you realize you could compete in college?
I didn't realize I could run track until I got here. I only ran one year in high school and that was just to help me with football. When I got here and ran for the first time, that's when I realized I could run at the college level.

Why did you choose Clemson?
There's something unique about Clemson. I really felt at home and felt like I was surrounded by good people. I'm also close to my brother who lives in Atlanta, and we're really close so that's good. That played a big role, being around some family, since everyone is so far away in Florida.

What is the hardest part of playing two sports at such a high level?
Time management. Your body gets really tired and sometimes you don't feel like doing your work. You have to push through it and work when you're fatigued if you're going to play both sports. Then balancing family, social life and school - it's tough.

How do you run outdoor track and play spring football?
They split it up. We do track one day and football the next. Every now and then we might do a little bit more football than track, but it balances out pretty well. The coaches talk about it.

What do you consider yourself - a football player who runs track, or a runner who plays football?
(Said with absolutely no hesitation…) I'm a football player who runs track.

What is your favorite thing to do in Clemson when you're not training?
Hang out with friends, play Guitar Hero and other games.

What is your biggest accomplishment away from athletics?
When I helped out with these kids for class. The look on their faces when we were there was great. We go to children's homes for community service hours. That played a big role in my life, showing me how grateful I (should be).

What is your most memorable moment during your time at Clemson?
In football, I'd say scoring my first touchdown. I muffed a punt and then returned it 92 yards my freshman year. On the track, winning the ACC Championship in the 60m indoors and breaking the record.

Who is your most influential role model?
Jerry Rice. His work ethic is tremendous. He never took a day off and that's what I want to do every day when I step on the field.

What is the best advice a coach has ever given you?
Go out there and just have fun.

What are your goals for the ACC Championship and beyond that?
I want to perform well and I want to win. I really want to bring an ACC championship trophy back to Clemson. It has been a while. That is what I and all of the sprinters are looking to do (this) week.
