Maryland's Dominic Berger

Feb. 26, 2008

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland's Dominic Berger and Virginia Tech's Kristen Callan have been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's and Women's Track and Field Performer of the Week, respectively, after seizing first-place in their events at the Virginia Tech Challenge over the weekend.

Berger, a senior from Mitchellville, Md., took the top spot in the 60-meter hurdles in Blacksburg, Va., this past weekend after posting a season-best mark of 7.83 seconds. With that time, he achieved the NCAA's provisional qualifying standard for next month's national championship meet, and strengthened his position as the No. 2 hurdler in the conference. Berger, the 2007 ACC champion in the 60-meter hurdles, ranks among the nation's top 20 in the event entering this week's league championships.

A redshirt-senior for the No. 11 Virginia Tech women's track and field team, Callan established a season-best mark is the weight-throw event this weekend in the Hokies' Rector Field House. Her distance of 65'3.50," which was set on the first-day of competition, bettered her previous top mark by nearly two feet, and was enough to claim first-place at the event. The Monroe, N.Y., native currently has the ACC's No. 2 mark of the season, and is a provisional qualifier for the 2008 NCAA Championships.

Both teams will participate at the 2008 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, which kickoff this Thursday, Feb. 28, on the campus of the University of North Carolina. The three-day event will conclude Saturday afternoon and will be streamed live throughout the week on ACCSelect.com.
