North Carolina's Henning and Florida State's Williams Earn ACC Indoor Track & Field Honors
Jan. 29, 2008 GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina's Walter Henning and Florida State's Kim Williams have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Performers of the Week after a weekend in which each took first-place in their respective event, achieved qualifying times for the NCAA Championships, and reset the league's top 2007-08 marks for their event. Henning, a freshman from Kings Park, N.Y., participated in the weight throw at the Penn State National in University Park, Pa., over the weekend. Competing against more than 20 others in the event, Henning recorded a mark of 70-03.00 to take first-place. With the performance, he bested the second-place finisher by more than four feet, improved upon the ACC's previous top mark for the season by nearly 12 feet, and also achieved the NCAA's provisional qualifying standard. Williams, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, opened her collegiate track and field career at the Tom Jones Memorial Classic in Gainesville, Fla., this past weekend. With just her third jump of the competition, the Seminole freshman achieved a mark of 44-00.7 to earn the first-place finish. Williams was the only participant to surpass the 44-foot mark at the event, and also the only triple-jumper to reach the NCAA automatic qualifying mark. Williams currently owns the ACC's top triple jump mark of the season. Both North Carolina and Florida State will again be in action this weekend. The Tar Heels, and several other ACC teams, will compete at Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C., this Friday and Saturday, while the Seminoles will travel to Lincoln, Neb., for the Nebraska Invitational.
