FSU Men Clinch 4th Straight NCAA East Regional Title; Women Tie For Fourth

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - It was a fitting final bow for senior Walter Dix and the Florida State men's track team as they closed down its last meet at Mike Long Track this season with the Seminoles' fourth-consecutive NCAA East Regional Title. The team and its premiere sprinter will now head west to Iowa on June 11-14 for to fight for their third-straight NCAA Championship.

The women's team also tied its best finish to date at the four spot.

"We had a great day," said head coach Bob Braman. "We got done what we needed to get done and put ourselves in a good spot heading to nationals in two weeks. Now we just need to rest up for the next week, keep every body healthy and head to Iowa."


Virginia Tech Women Claim Second Straight East Regional Title

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Sophomore Queen Harrison set NCAA East Region meet and school records in both the 100 and 400-meter hurdles and led off a school record-setting 4x400-meter relay to help the Virginia Tech women's track & field team to its second consecutive NCAA East Regional crown on Saturday at Florida State's Mike Long Track in Tallahassee, Fla.

The sixth-ranked women's team totaled 92 points during the weekend to edge Penn State by one point for its second consecutive regional title. The No. 42 men's team finished sixth with a total of 30 points, led by two athletes who posted automatic qualifying performances on the final day of the meet.


Clemson's Greeley, Padgett Win Championships at NCAA East Regional

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Travis Padgett and Mitch Greeley claimed individual championships Saturday to lead Clemson men's track & field to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA East Region meet, held at the Mike Long Track on the campus of Florida State. It marked the first time since the inaugural East Region Championships in 2003 that Clemson had multiple event champions. The Tigers have now finished in the top five at the East Region meet five of the six years the event has been held.

Florida State captured its third straight East Region team championship with a total of 88.5 points, while Florida was runner-up with 68 points. Clemson totaled 38 points. Head Coach Bob Pollock was pleased with the team's performance overall, but knows the Tigers let a few points slip away.


Clemson's Mamona Qualifies for NCAA Championships in Triple Jump

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Clemson sophomore Patricia Mamona earned her second straight trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships by virtue of a fifth-place finish in the triple jump Saturday at the NCAA East Regional. The Lady Tigers scored 7.66 points and finished 25th as a team in the largest of the NCAA's four track & field regions. It was Clemson's fifth top-25 team finish in the six years of the regional format.

Mamona was fifth in a very competitive triple jump final. She had a personal best mark of 43'11.25" on her fifth jump, her second of the final round. Mamona placed third at last year's meet and has advanced to each NCAA national meet, indoor and outdoor, of her two-year career with the Lady Tiger program. Her previous best in the triple jump outdoors had been a 43'4.5" mark at this year's ACC Championships. She was incredibly consistent Saturday, as she surpassed her previous personal best on four of the six jumps. She fouled the other two.


Lehman & Loughlin Pace Duke On Second Day Of NCAA East Regional

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Duke Track and Field team completed competition at the two-day NCAA East Regional at Mike Long Track on Saturday. The men's team finished tied for 36th place with six points and the women tied for 38th with four team points.

Junior Molly Lehman placed sixth in the 1,500m finals with a time of 4:26.19 on Saturday in Tallahassee. That earned the Duke women three team points and gave Lehman a good chance of making the NCAA Championships on June 11-14 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Junior Patricia Loughlin clocked in at 10:33.57 in the 3,000m steeplechase on Saturday night. Loughlin picked up one point for the Blue Devils by finishing in eighth place and has an outside shot at making the NCAA's.


Jordan, Moss Lead Georgia Tech on Second Day of NCAA East Region Championships

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Sophomore Alphonso Jordan placed second in the men's triple jump to lead the Georgia Tech men's and women's track & field teams on the second day of the NCAA East Region Championships at the Mike Long Track on the Florida State University campus.

Jordan finished with a personal-best mark of 52 feet, 9 ½ inches for a second-place finish in the triple jump to earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Championships. Senior James Lemons II finished eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 51 feet, 9 ¾ inches.

The men's team finished the regional with 20 points and in ninth place. The women's squad led by senior Shantia Moss, who earned a trip to the NCAA Championships with a third-place finish in the women's 100-meter hurdles, finished 11th in the region with 14 points. Moss finished the hurdles final with a time of 13.09.


Maryland's Berger Automatically Qualifies for NCAA Championships

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Dominic Berger posted a fifth-place finish at the NCAA East Regional Championships to automatically qualify for Nationals in the 110-meter hurdles.

Berger, a three-time All-America performer, had a time of 13.91 event.

On the women's side, Toni Aluko narrowly missed automatically qualifying for Nationals in the high jump. The senior posted a jump of 5-09.25, matching the height of fifth-place finisher Priscilla Frederick of St. John's, but placed sixth after a jump off. Aluko will now have to wait for the NCAA Championships Field selection, which takes place on Tuesday.

Jillian Anwah will also have to wait for Tuesday's selections after she posted a seventh-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 49-00.25.


Miami's Harris Guarantees Spot in NCAA National Championships

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of Miami's four-time All-American Tim Harris advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with his fourth-place finish in the 800-meters at the NCAA East Region Final at Mike Long Track on the campus of Florida State University.

With his third-fastest time of the season (1:47.52), the four-time All-American Harris will represent the Hurricanes in the NCAA 800-meter National Championships. The senior finished fourth on Saturday, with the top five finishers advancing to the national championships in two weeks.

"He (Harris) led all but the last 10 meters," said head coach Mike Ward. "He stuck to his strategy of jumping out to a quick lead, it just didn't result in a win. The most important thing is that he will be running at the National Championships.


Four Hurricanes Headed to NCAA Championships

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The 24th-ranked University of Miami women's track and field team will have four individuals in the NCAA Outdoor National Championships, after strong performances in Saturday's East Region Championships at Mike Long Track on the campus of Florida State University.

With a total of 37 points, Miami finished sixth in the region, with ACC foe Virginia Tech taking the East Region crown with 92 points.

The Hurricanes sent two freshmen to the regional tournament in the 400-meter hurdles, and now those two will be traveling to Des Moines, Iowa to participate in the NCAA National Championships, June 11-14. Takecia Jameson shaved nearly two seconds off her season-best time to take second in Saturday's final, with a time of 56.60. Her teammate Ti'erra Brown finished right behind her in third place at 56.98.


Tar Heels Wrap Up Competiton At East Regional

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Top-three performances from Dominique Jackson in the 800 meters and Patience Coleman in the high jump helped lead the North Carolina women's track and field team to a seventh-place finish at Saturday's East Regional meet at Florida State. A fourth-place effort in the triple jump by Austin Davis and a sixth-place run by Charles Cox in the 400 helped the Tar Heel men finish 11th.

Jackson finished less than a half-second behind Penn's Jesse Carlin to finish second in 2 minutes, 6.30 seconds. The Fairfield, Calif., freshman earned an automatic berth in next month's NCAA meet and picked up eight team points for Carolina. Coleman, a freshman from Durham, had her best effort of the season in the high jump, clearing 5-11 1/4 (1.81 meters) to take third and collect six points for the Tar Heels.


NC State Men Finish 8th at NCAA East Regional; Vegh Advances to NCAAs

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - NC State men's track and field finished eighth at the NCAA East Regional as the second Wolfpack athlete advanced to the NCAA Championships on the second and final day of competition in Tallahassee, Fla.

Tibor Vegh finished fourth in the steeplechase to advance to the NCAA Championships for the second straight season with a 8:52.31.

John Martinez, who was ranked ninth nationally in the steeplechase heading into the regional, finished seventh to just miss making the national meet as an automatic qualifier. He will now go into a pool and should make the NCAA Championships as an at-large selection.


NC State Women Wrap Up Stay at NCAA Regional

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - NC State's DeMiracle Washington finished 11th in the triple jump with a season-high tying distance of 41'09.75", the second-best mark in school history in the event. Washington advanced to the NCAA Championships on Friday in the long jump.

Mattie Beathea was also in action for NC State after qualifying in the high jump with a mark of 5'08.75" early this season and was 13th at the meet with a jump of 5'07.25".


Virginia's Ayeni, Garcia and Jesien Qualify for National Championships

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Juniors Andrew Jesien and Yemi Ayeni, and sophomore Stephanie Garcia earned automatic bids to the NCAA Outdoor Championships with top finishes at the NCAA East Regional Championships in Tallahassee, Fla., on Saturday.

Jesien, finishing third in the 1500m, clocked in at 3:51.69 to mark the best finish by a Cavalier in the event at the regional meet, while Ayeni took third in the discus. Ayeni finished with a throw of 58.80m, while Garcia finished fifth in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:25.70. Garcia's finish is a best for Virginia since Dawn Cleary took fifth in the event at the 2003 championships.

The trio joins Billie-Jo Grant, who qualified yesterday by winning the discus, as automatic qualifiers to the national meet. This will be the third time Grant has advanced to nationals, while it marks a second for Ayeni and Garcia, and a first for Jesien.


Loyd Sets WFU Program Record at Regional Finals

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Michelle Loyd continued to hit top marks at the NCAA Regionals, setting a new school 400m hurdle record with a 58.06 performance in the final day of competition.

Loyd broke her own record of 58.33 in the event, set previously at the Georgia Tech Invitational on May 17.

The 58.06 mark was the eighth best time in the regional finals, with only the top five finishers advancing on to nationals.

The regional competition wrapped up the outdoor season for the Demon Deacons. Qualifying members of the squad will now head to the USATF Junior Championships at the end of June.
