Seminole Men, Tar Heel Women Lead After Second Day of ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships

CORAL GABLES, FLA. (theACC.com) – After eight events at the 2009 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Florida State and North Carolina lead the team competition after the second day of competition. The Championship, held at Miami’s Cobb Stadium will conclude on Saturday with 13 additional events.

The Tar Heels won the Heptathlon and High Jump to take the women’s lead entering the final day. Sophomore Patience Coleman took the High Jump while sophomore Gabrielle Gioia won the heptathlon by 59 points. North Carolina also tallied All-ACC performances from senior Addie Bracy in the Steeplechase and junior Alexandra Coppadge.

The defending league champion Seminoles surged to the men’s lead with four All-ACC finishes. Sophomore Brian Chubudu, freshman Michael Putman and senior Tim Reen took second place in the Long Jump, Shot Put and High Jump events, respectively. Junior Trey Andrews finished third in the Steeplechase.

North Carolina’s Mateo Sossah took the Men’s Decathlon while Georgia Tech’s Jerome Miller and Steve Marcelle won the High Jump and Shot Put. Duke’s Jade Ellis won the Long Jump while fellow Blue Devil Ryan McDermott won the Steeplechase.

Florida State took a pair of event titles in the Steeplechase and Long Jump when Lydia Willemse and Kimberly Williams took top honors. NC State’s Lawanda Henry won the Shot Put to pace the Wolfpack.

Florida State’s men (63) lead Virginia (49), Duke (40), North Carolina (38), Georgia Tech (36) and Virginia Tech (33). On the women’s side, North Carolina (52) leads Virginia Tech (40), Florida State (39), Virginia (37), NC State (32.5), Clemson (31), Georgia Tech (28.5) and Maryland (20).

The 2009 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships will continue on the campus of the University of Miami on Saturday. The day's events will open at 1:00 p.m. with a field events and continuing at 4:00 p.m. with track finals.
