Jeff Smith Smashes BC Record Books in Outdoor Track Debut

AMHERST, Mass. - Former Boston College football player and current track athlete Jeff Smith broke right in to the BC all-time record books in his outdoor debut at the UMass Spring Meet Saturday, breaking records in the 100 and landing fifth all-time in the 200 meter dash Saturday.

Smith, who clocked a 10.56 in the 100 and a 21.51 in the 200 placed first in each event, breaking a school record that was over 20 years old. His time of 10.56 in the 100 is just 1/100th of a second off the NCAA Regional standard. With his top individual marks, Smith helped his team to a fourth-place finish (57 points) out of eight squads at the meet.

BC also had multiple other top-five performances on the day. Freshmen Conor Shelly took fifth in the high jump (6'1.25") and Matt Kosmas placed fourth in the discus throw (128' 3"). Senior Dan Springer marked a 3:58.37 in the 1500, placing third. Freshman Mark Domaracki also took third in the 400, clocking a 49.38. Senior Jeff Klastsky placed fifth in the 800 (1:55.14) and freshman Ian Thomas also took a fifth-place finish in the 400 hurdles (57.53).


BC Women Place Third at UMass Spring Meet

AMHERST, Mass. - With many athletes taking the weekend off to prepare for this upcoming weekend's ACC Championships, the Boston College women's outdoor track team still performed its best at the UMass Spring Meet on Saturday, registering 95 points and placing third out of eight teams.

Highlighting the afternoon were top individual performances by sophomores Melissa Hadfield (long jump) and Meghan Callahan (400). Hadfield placed first with a jump of 18' 1". Callahan won the 400 in a time of 57.84

Other top five performers from the meet included senior Carly Rayburn (second, 10'11.75") and freshman Danielle DePalo (fourth, 10'6") in the pole vault, sophomores Caitlin McCann in the triple jump (fifth, 34' 02.75") and high jump (fifth, 5'0.5") and Gretchen Andrus in the steeplechase (third, 11:10.53). Sophomores Teyahnie Boone (12.54) and Hadfield (12.92) respectively took third and fourth in the 100 meter dash. Junior Alicia Henry clocked a 2:14.90 in the 800, placing third. Boone (25.29) and Callahan (25.71) registered additional top-five performances in the 200 meter dash. The women's 4x100 relay ran for a second place finish in 49.50, wrapping up the Eagles' top outings at the meet.


Clemson Men Take First-Place in Five Events at Solid Orange Classic

CLEMSON, S.C. - Five members of the Clemson men's track & field team posted first-place finishes Saturday at the women's Solid Orange Classic event. The start of the meet was delayed for well over an hour due to lightning in the area as well as heavy rain at times.

Kendall Millhouse won the 100m dash title with a time of 10.75 in the final. He had the top time in the prelims as well at 10.74, which marked a season-best for the freshman out of Summerville, SC.

Matt Hughes and Matt Bruce dueled for first place in the 1500m run. Both natives of Oshawa, Ontario, Hughes got the best of Bruce on Saturday. He posted a time of 3:57.61, ahead of Bruce's crossing time of 4:00.80. Sam Bryfczysnki dropped out of the race early. Jasen Turnbull had a season-best in the 800m run with a time of 1:54.93.

Andrew Porter had hopes of posting his first regional-qualifying time of the season in the intermediate hurdles, but settled for second place and a time of 54.95 in the event. He was a regional qualifier last season.


Tiger Women Successful at Solid Orange Classic

CLEMSON, S.C. - The women's track & field team waited out a weather delay at the Solid Orange Classic, but turned out positive results Saturday at the Rock Norman Track. The start of the meet was backed up nearly an hour and a half due to lightning in the area and rainy conditions. The skies cleared late in the morning, and every event was completed as scheduled despite windy conditions in the afternoon.

Patricia Mamona captured a pair of first-place finishes on Saturday. She won the long jump with an effort of 18'5.25". She also won the triple jump title after surpassing the regional standard with a mark of 41'10.5". Mamona ranks second in school history in the event.

The Clemson "A" team won the 4x100m relay Saturday. Kristine Scott led off, then Ra'Sheena Parker extended the Lady Tigers' lead for good in the second leg. Nakeisha Wineglass and Krystal Barringer finished the job for Clemson, who posted a time of 47.58 to cruise to the win.


Spooner & Field Athletes Bedazzle At Sun Angel Classic

TEMPE, Ariz., and CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Duke Outdoor Track and Field team had an outstanding overall performance at the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz., on Saturday, with nine athletes qualifying for the postseason and three earning marks in the top-five of the Duke records. Closer to home, a slew of Blue Devils competed in a rain-soaked Tony Waldrop UNC Invitational in Chapel Hill.

Freshmen Anne Marie Gordon (10th place) and Amy Fryt (13th place) each hit personal bests of 12'-1.5" in the pole vault on Saturday in Tempe. That tied them for the fourth-best vault in Duke history.

Redshirt freshman John Austin once again improved upon his personal best and Duke record in the javelin, this time throwing the spear 221'-4" in Tempe.


Hosts Tack On 11 More Regional Marks At Seminole Invitational Track And Field Meet

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - In one day, the Florida State men's track and field team more than doubled its entries into the NCAA East Regional Championships. FSU added 11 more times and distances to its stockpile on Saturday (April 12) at the Seminole Invitational. The Seminoles now have 20 marks for the meet to be held May 30-31, at Mike Long Track.

In his first non-relay action of the outdoor season, sophomore Charles Clark (Virginia Beach, Va.) ran the fastest time in the country with a time of 45.30 that broke assistant coach Ken Harnden's track record time of 45.32. Also running a regional qualifying mark was Kevin Williams (Miami, Fla.) with a time of 47.18.

Florida State women's team grabbed four top three place finishes in variety of events. Heath tallied her second top three finish as she came across the line in the 200m dash with a time of 25.17. Sophomore Erin Simmons (Argyle, Texas) was third in the javelin as she notched a throw of 33.41m/109-07. Her classmate Rosanna Bell (Gainesville, Fla.) ran a time of 11:18.71 to take third in the 3,000m steeplechase.


Maryland's 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 Women's Relay Teams Qualify for ECAC Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. and LEWISBURG, Pa. - Both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 women's relay teams placed second and qualified for the ECAC Championships at the Onesty/Abramson Invitational at the University of Virginia yesterday.

The 4 x 100 team of Chanel Williams, Michelle Fedrick, Crystal Bardge and Christina Smith posted a time of 46.21, while the foursome of Fedrick, Bardge, Williams and Tolulope Olugbemi had a time of 3:47.97 in the 4 x 400 event.

The Terps also sent two athletes to the Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell University, where Meghan Braffet met the ECAC standard in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:59.73. The mark was also a season-best time for the Terrapins.

In the men's high jump, David Edwards-Brennan tied his season-best mark of 6-08.75 and placed second. The senior had previously qualified for the IC4A Championships at the Shamrock Invitational.


Harris Breaks Another School Record at Miami Elite

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The University of Miami saw it's senior track and field student-athletes for the last time Saturday night at Cobb Stadium in the Miami Elite Invitational. Even among some of the world's best the Hurricanes weren't to be outdone.

Senior Tim Harris had a goal coming into the Miami Elite, and it was to set the school record in the 1,500-meters, an event that isn't his specialty, the 800-meters. With the home crowd watching him for the last time, the four-time All-American didn't disappoint, breaking the nine-year old record with a time of 3:53.38. The old record of 3:54.03 was set in 1999 by sophomore Christian Zarandona.

Andrew Chuplis and Ryan Woodlee both competed in the 1,500-meters as well and placed third and sixth, with times of 4:06.88 and 4:11.36 respectively.


Talley Has a Career Day at the Miami Elite

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The No. 7 University of Miami saw its senior track and field student-athletes for the last time Saturday night at Cobb Stadium in the Miami Elite Invitational. Even among some of the world's best the Hurricanes weren't to be outdone.

Senior Khadija Talley said goodbye to Cobb Stadium in fashion as she won both the shot put and the discus, replacing her own school record in the later. Not only did she break her own school record with her throw of 57.10m but she also recorded the top mark in the nation. That makes her the third member on the women's track and field team to hold the No. 1 ranking in an event, joining Krista Simkins (200-meters) and Ti'erra Brown (400-meter hurdles). In the shot put, Talley reached a season-best and NCAA regional mark, reaching 15.00-meters, moving up to No. 29 in the nation. She also posted the best collegiate mark in the hammer throw at 52.96.


Tar Heels' Nall Doubles Up On Senior Day At Tony Waldrop Invite

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Carolina hosted the Tony Waldrop Invitational over the weekend and turned in numerous regional qualifying times in preparation for the ACC Outdoor Championships next week at Georgia Tech. Donte Nall doubled up with regional marks as he took the top spot in the long jump, while placing second in the triple jump. Brie Felnagle was back in action for the Tar Heels and immediately set a regional mark in the 800-meter run, winning the event handily. The Tar Heels will head to Atlanta in search of ACC titles next weekend, the Championships are set to run Thursday-Saturday.

A pair of Johnson's finished 1-2 in the 200-meter dash with Tyra Johnson claiming the top spot in 24.25 just ahead of Christine Johnson who clocked in at 24.49. Ashley Hill was not far behind as she placed fourth (25.05). Alexandra Coppadge placed 15th in the 200 with a time of 25.90, while fellow multi-athlete Gabby Gioia finished 28th (27.54). Dominque Jackson took home second in the 400-meter dash as she clocked in with a time of 56.01, just ahead of Callie Pottinger who finished third (56.61) and Shardae Anderson who finished fourth (56.95).


Wolfpack's Hutton Wins 400H, Hits NCAA Mark for Fourth Time

RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State hurdle specialist Kevin Hutton jumped a season-best 51.14 in the 400m hurdles on Saturday at the Sea Ray Relays to lead the Pack athletes in action. Dexter Adams finished second in the long jump with his third NCAA Regional mark with an outdoor personal-best 25'08.00, fourth in school history. The Sea Ray Relays took place in Knoxville, Tenn.

Hutton's time was the fourth time in the event he reached the NCAA Regional standard.

The NC State 4x100 relay team turned in a 41.04, the second-best time of the season for the relay. The runners were: A'Tolani Akinkuotu, Reggie Reese, Hutton and Adams.


NC State's Washington Wins Triple Jump and Long Jump at UNC Invitational

RALEIGH, N.C. - Senior jumper DeMiracle Washington won the triple and long jump at the UNC Invitational on Saturday, April 12, to lead the NC State women's track and field team. Both of her marks were NCAA Regional Marks and season highs.

Marilynn Angell hit a season-high in the 400m hurdles with a 1:06.40.

Mattie Bethea was fifth in the long jump with a season-best 18'05.00".

Bethea also finished sixth in the 100m hurdles with a 15.29, her second-best time of the season.


Virginia's Throwers Highlight Final Day of Lou Onesty Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia's throwers highlighted day two of the Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson Invitational at Lannigan Field on Saturday. All-Americans junior Yemi Ayeni and senior Billie-Jo Grant won their respective discus events, while Alexa Manning won the shot put and junior Meghan Briggs won the javelin. All four throwers threw NCAA regional qualifying marks for the Cavaliers in each of the events.

Manning's throw of 14.97 marks a personal-best for the junior, while Ayeni's mark of 59.92m in the discus was a season-best. Briggs' throw of 47.50m in the javelin was a personal-best.

Freshmen Adams Abdulrazaaq and Greg Nelson also qualified for the regional meet. Abdulrazaaq crossed the 110m hurdles line in a personal-best time of 14.24, while Nelson won his first-ever 400m hurdles race in an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 52.43.


Hokies Close Out Sea Ray Relays

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Javjeniy Olhovsky finished as the runner-up in the invitational section of the men's pole vault to highlight the Virginia Tech track & field squad's final day at the Sea Ray Relays Saturday in LaPorte Stadium.

The 33rd-ranked men's team was led by Olhovsky, the sophomore finished as the top collegiate in the invitational section of the men's pole vault with an outdoor season-best effort of 17'6.5" (5.35m). Jared Jodon followed in fourth place with a personal-best-tying height of 17'0.75" (5.20m), while Joe Davis registered a ninth-place height of 16'6.75" (5.05m). Former Hokie Brian Mondschein placed first with a height of 17'10.5" (5.45m), while competing for Vertical Technique.

Igor Misljenovic won the open section of the discus throw with a personal-best effort of 180'0" (54.86m), taking the event crown by exactly four feet over the runner-up. Misljenovic then turned in a third-place finish in the open section of the men's shot put with an outdoor season-best mark of 54'4.5" (16.57m). Matej Muza also finished third in the invitational section of the hammer throw with a regional-qualifying distance of 220'4" (67.17m).


Wake Forest's Warsaw Hits Regional Marks in 400m Hurdles

ATHENS, Ga. - The Wake Forest track and field squad wrapped up action at the Spec Towns Invitational in Athens over the weekend, adding one more NCAA Regional qualifier to the growing list of Demon Deacon competitors set for action in Tallahassee at the end of May.

Phillip Warsaw hit the mark with a 52.41 time in the 400m hurdles, running just under the regional bar of 52.51. Other Demon Deacons who've set regional marks this season include Michelle Loyd (400m hurdles), Carly Mauch (Javelin), Caroline Vaughn (100m hurdles), Anna Nosenko (5000m) and Kerry Major (100m).

Thomas Sensing just missed the regional discus mark of 169-07 with a 169-04 throw. The hurl was a new personal best for the Franklin, Tenn. native and was good for fourth place in the event. Sensing also posted a WFU season best in the hammer throw with a 142-10 mark.
