Boston College Men Take Fourth At SCSU Owl Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Boston College men's track team registered 12 top-five individual performances, placing fourth overall out of 10 teams at Southern Connecticut State's Owl Invitational Saturday.

Among those, two BC athletes took first place in their respective events. Senior Jeremy Zagorski won the 1500 race in a time of 3:59.02. Fellow senior Adam Moitoso topped out in the 5000 run, marking a time of 15:19.59.

Other top-five finishes included freshman Mark Domaracki in the 400 (fifth, 50.57), junior James LaGreca in the 1500 (fifth, 4:03.02) and junior David Emerson in the 5000 (15:25.45) and freshman Ian Thomas in the 400 meter hurdles (fourth, 58.18).


Boston College Women Take Second At SCSU Owl Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Boston College women's track team registered 19 top-five individual performances, placing second overall out of 10 teams at Southern Connecticut State's Owl Invitational on Saturday.

Senior Alison Fogarty, sophomores Meaghan Callahan, Teyhanie Boone and Melissa Hadfield and freshman Katherine Watson led the BC squad with two top-five performances each. Fogarty won the 400 meter dash in 58.02 and placed fourth in the 200 meter dash, clocking a 26.35 Callahan placed third in both the 100 meter dash (12.67) and the 400 meter dash (59.32). Boone took fourth in the 100 (12.79) and third in the 200 (26.00). Hadfield placed fifth the 100 (13.14) and third in the long jump (5.13m). Watson placed fifth in the 100 meter hurdles (16.46) and fourth in the long jump (5.03m).

Other top-five finishes included freshman Siobhan Breagy in the 800 (second, 2:20.00) sophomore Christine Sullivan (third, 4:50.73) and freshman Monica Chase (fifth, 4:55.13) in the 1500. Three BC women placed in the top five of the 5000.


Clemson Men Complete Rain-Shortened Yellow Jacket Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga. - A handful of men's track & field athletes from Clemson competed Saturday in a rain-shortened Yellow Jacket Invitational at the George C. Griffin Track complex on Georgia Tech's campus. Only half of the events were completed due to the inclement weather.

Cowin Mills posted a strong performance in the quarter mile. The senior from Elkins Park, PA had a time of 47.65 on Saturday, which was sixth-best overall among 30 competitors. The 47.65 was shy of a regional-qualifying time, but was Clemson's best effort of the young season in the 400m dash. In the 1500m run, red-shirt sophomore Sam Bryfczynski had a personal best time of 3:56.29 and was 11th in the field of 50 runners.


Javelin Throwers Lead Clemson Women at Rain-Shortened Yellow Jacket Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga. - A handful of women's track & field athletes from Clemson competed Saturday in a rain-shortened Yellow Jacket Invitational at the George C. Griffin Track complex on Georgia Tech's campus. Only half of the events were completed due to the inclement weather, but Linda Buchholz and Bethanie Wachna both qualified for the East Region Championships by virtue of strong marks in the javelin throw.

Buchholz, the school record-holder in the event after her performance at this very meet last season, finished runner-up Saturday after posting a mark of 148'7". Wachna was right behind in third place after she recorded a personal best of 145'11". The sophomore from Canada moved into second place in Clemson's record books in the event, bypassing Kammie Blount and Krystal Woods to move behind Buchholz in the javelin.

Ra'Sheena Parker was Clemson's top performer in the 100m dash Saturday, turning in a time of 12.40 which put her in 18th place overall. Sierra Hill finished 21st in the quarter mile with a time of 58.37.


Duke's Schwitzer Places 28th At XC Worlds; Schallmo Leads Duke Men In Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C., and EDINBURGH, Scotland - The Duke Men's Outdoor Track and Field team had 14 athletes compete this weekend in the Raleigh Relays at the Paul Derr Track and Field Stadium. Across the pond, freshman Emily Schwitzer ran in the IAAF World Junior Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Schwitzer ran the six-kilometer course in Edinburgh in 21:19 on Sunday. That time placed her 28th at the World Junior Championships. She was the second-fastest American in the race, finishing only behind Alexandra Gits in 13th place with a time of 20:41. Ethiopia's Genzebe Dibaba was the world champion, clocking in at 19:59.

Sophomore Mike Schallmo qualified for the IC4A Championships for the first time this season in the discus with his 157'-7" toss on Friday in Raleigh. That performance earned him fourth place in the men's discus at the meet.


Four More Regional Times Record For Home Team At FSU Relays

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Numerous Florida State track and field athletes are having so much success s on their home track that they're setting themselves up to compete on it in two months at the NCAA East Regional meet. The Seminoles recorded four more regional qualifying marks on Saturday (March 29) during the final day of the 29th Annual FSU Relays.

"It was a really good weekend across the board," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "There were a lot of great races and really fast times in both the collegiate and high school meets. This was a good chance for us to showcase our facility to a lot of top athletes."

For the second day in a row, the quartet of Drew Brunson (Snellville, Ga.), Brandon Byram (Gallatin, Tenn.), Michael Ray Garvin (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) and Charles Clark (Virginia Beach, Va.) had an impressive run. The relay posted a time of 39.38 to take second and qualify for the NCAA Regionals.


Moss, Gibbs Lead Jackets at Rain-Shortened Yellow Jacket Invitational

ATLANTA - The Georgia Tech men's and women's track and field teams fought through some bad weather to compete on the second day of the Yellow Jacket Invitational at the George C. Griffin track on the Georgia Tech campus.

The track meet was called early after several lightning delays and more bad weather on the way. Meet officials decided to call the meet after lightning was spotted during the men's 800-meter run.

Shantia Moss, running through the raindrops, led the women's team with a win in the 60-meter hurdles with an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 13.39.

Jenny Sims finished second in the women's 1500-meter run with a time of 4:32.48. In the women's 400-meter dash, Kayla McKeirnan crossed the line ninth with a time of 56.98.


Terps Capture 11 First-Place Finishes at Maryland Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Eleven Terrapin athletes captured first-place finishes at the 2008 Maryland Invitational Outdoor Track and Field meet at Kehoe Track Complex today.

In the shot put, Maryland claimed first-place finishes in both the men's and women's events. For the women, Jillian Anwah recorded a season-best mark of 44-06.75. For the men, Sal Delhierro posted a throw of 51-10.50. Also placing for the Terps in the women's event were Aysha Gregory, who finished just behind Anwah in second place with another season-best mark of 43-03.25 and Ashley Williams, who finished fourth in the event with a shot put of 42-07.00. On the men's side, Geoff Goidell placed fourth with a mark of 48-06.75.

Delhierro also posted a first-place finish in the hammer with a career-best mark of 172-04.

Also for the Terrapin throwers, Aysha Gregory continued her strong start to the outdoor season by posting a throw of 175-08 in the hammer to place first. The senior has already met the NCAA Regional and ECAC-qualifying marks in the event.


Miami Comes Away With Four Victories in Men's Track

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The University of Miami men's track team wins four individual events in the first ever Hurricane Challenge, Saturday at Cobb Stadium, as an NCAA Regional mark is improved upon.

Cory Nelms continues to have a successful sophomore campaign as he improved on his regional qualifying time from a week ago, with a second place finish in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.04. Senior Les Bradley II came in fifth place with a final time of 14.37. Nelms also took second in the 400-meter hurdles at 54.09.

For the second week in a row, Casey McGinn took the crown in the pole vault. Saturday he reach 4.75m in the win.


Miami's Simkins and Brown Take Nation's Top Times

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The University of Miami women's track team was running on all cylinders Saturday at the Hurricane Challenge at Cobb Stadium as 10 individuals and both relay teams qualified for the NCAA Regionals. In the process, the Hurricanes saw two student-athletes reach No. 1 rankings.

Two weeks removed from winning the NCAA Indoor 400-meters, Krista Simkins made her outdoor debut in style, as she ran the fastest 200-meter time in the country among this year's collegiate athletes. Her winning time of 23.14 easily qualifies for regionals. Improving on last week's time and setting a new personal best, was sophomore Kristy Whyte, who finished two spots behind Simkins with a time of 23.56, ranking her third in the nation.


Tar Heels Wrap Up Competition At Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. - The North Carolina track and field teams wrapped up competition at the Raleigh Relays and Liberty Asics Collegiate Invitational on Saturday. Erek Latzka picked up a fifth place finish in the javelin throw in Raleigh, while Alexandra Coppadge claimed the heptathlon title at Liberty. The Tar Heels will split up and head to Texas, Duke and North Carolina A&T next weekend.

Coppadge posted 4,864 points in the heptathlon at the Liberty Invite to win the event, just ahead of teammate Gabby Gioia who tallied 4,569 points to claim second place. Coppadge took second in the long jump (17-00.50, 612 points), third in the javelin throw (100-10, 490 points) and fifth in the 800-meter run (2:31.09, 679 points) for the win. Gioia posted similar results with a third place finish in the long jump (16-06.00, 567 points), second in the javelin (115-07, 576 points) and fourth in the 800 (2:30.84, 682 points) for the second place overall finish. Also competing at Liberty was Matthew Villemain who posted a second place finish in the decathlon. Villemain took the top spot in the 110-meter hurdles (16.56, 671 points), second in the discus (89-07, 412 points), first in the pole vault (12-11.75, 606 points), third in the javelin (113-08, 365 points) and closed with a great showing in the 1500-meter dash (4:46.86, 638 points) en route to falling just 67 points shy of winning the event.


NC State Sprinters Shine on Final Day of adidas Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. - The 2008 adidas Raleigh Relays wrapped up on Saturday on a cold and rainy day at the newly renovated Derr Track on NC State's campus. The NC State men's track and field team got strong showings from its group of sprinters to post a pair of top-3 finishes in the sprint relays. In addition, NC State had spots two and three in the 200m and strong 100m finishes, as well.

John Martinez finished third in the 1,500m to pace the distance runners on the final day.

The 4x100 relay team finished third with a time of 41.22, and was the top collegiate relay in the event. The 4x200 squad finished second with a 1:26.79, and was again the top collegiate team in the event.


Five Cavaliers Win Titles at Hurricane Challenge

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Five Cavaliers won their events at the Hurricane Challenge Saturday to lead the Virginia track and field team, while senior All-American Billie-Jo Grant broke the school record in the discus.

Freshman Marcus Robinson led the squad winning the long (6.99m) and triple (14.62m) jumps, while senior All-Americans Yemi Ayeni and Grant won the men's and women's discus titles, respectively. Grant threw a personal-best 56.07m and Ayeni threw 59.09m, both regional qualifying marks. Grant also placed third in the shot put, and threw a qualifying mark of 14.96m.

Meghan Briggs rounded out those winning titles, taking first in the javelin with a throw of 45.76m. Ayla Smith and the men's and women's 4x100 relay teams each met regional marks, also. Smith ran a 58.85 in the 400m hurdles, while the men's relay ran a 40.60 and the women finished in 45.68.


  • Hokies Compete in Field Events at Weems Baskins Invitational

    COLUMBIA, S.C. - While the distance runners were competing in Raleigh, N.C, and Lynchburg, Va., Virginia Tech's field event performers won a pair of events in the Weems Baskins Invitational in Columbia, S.C.

    Leading the No. 3 women's team, first-year thrower Dorotea Habazin won the hammer throw in her Hokie outdoor season debut with a 206'5" (62.92m) effort. Sophomore Erika Schroeder won the shot put with a 46'0" (14.02m) mark.

    Representing the No. 27 men's squad, Ebenezer Amegashie finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.02 seconds.


  • Deacs Take Six Top Finishes at WCU Meet

    CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The gloomy weather delayed events at the Western Carolina Invitational, but a little light rain wasn't enough to stop the Demon Deacon track team from placing first in six events in Cullowhee on Saturday.

    Molly Kennedy took top ten finishes in four events, including first place overall in the 100-meter hurdles with a 14.72 sprint. In the high jump, Kennedy tied the first place mark with a 5-03.00 performance, in addition to earning high marks in the javelin throw and a first place triple jump mark.

    Junior Carly Mauch placed first in the Javelin competition with a 132-09 mark and took fourth in the hammer throw with a 130-08 performance.

    Jill Ahrens took a first place finish in the pole vault, beating the next best competitor by a full six inches with an 11-07.75 performance.
