CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Behind some outstanding individual performances on the third and final day of the 2008 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Eddie Smith Field House in Chapel Hill, N.C., the Florida State men and Virginia Tech women wrapped up the team conference titles for the second year in a row. The Seminoles, who have now won seven men's championships overall and six in a row, accumulated 135.5 points during the three day event, defeating second-place Georgia Tech by nearly 50 points. On Saturday, Florida State athletes were victorious in five of 12 overall events, and placed among the top three in eight of the 12. Overall, the `Noles won or placed in the top three in 12 of 17 events held during the championship week. Individual title winners for the Florida State men on Saturday included Daniel Roberts in the mile, Drew Brunson in the 60-meter hurdles, Charles Clark in the 400-meter dash, Michael Ray Garvin in the 200-meter dash and Luke Gunn in the 3,000-meter run. Brunson, a senior, set a championship-meet record with his win in the 60-meter hurdles, and also achieved an NCAA automatic qualifying time with a 7.69 finish. Five other FSU student-athletes finished among the top three on Saturday, including three second-place winners and two third-place finishers.
For the Hokie women, Saturday's team title was the second in school history. Paced by some dominating performances by Patrice Potts, Britni Spruill, Kristi Castlin and Queen Harrison, Virginia Tech piled up 138 overall points to win this year's ACC Championship by the largest margin of any women's squad since 1998. Potts, who entered the meet with the league's top 60-meter mark in 2008, turned in a time of 7.36 to earn her second-straight ACC title in the event, besting Spruill by just .06 seconds to give the Hokies a 1-2 sweep. Potts and Spruill also put up top five finishes in the 200, while Harrison took second in the 400, before teaming up with Castlin to give the Hokies another pair of top four finishers in the 60-meter hurdles. Other individual winners for Virginia Tech on Saturday included juniors Tasmin Fanning and Brittany Pryor in the 3,000-meter run and shot put, respectively. In all, the Hokie women earned first-place results in six of the week's 17 events, including three 1-2 sweeps, and placed at least one athlete among the top three in nine overall events. Taking second-place on the men's side was Georgia Tech, with 85 total points. Clemson, which has won 12 men's titles in its history, took third-place, while North Carolina and Virginia rounded out the top five. Finishing in a tie for second-place among the women's teams were North Carolina and Florida State, who had 88.5 points each. Miami and Virginia completed the week in fourth- and fifth-place, respectively. During the championship's three days of competition, five meet records were broken, as well as two ACC Indoor records and 10 Eddie Smith Field House building records. Florida State's Susan Kuijken, who took first-place at the league's 2007 Cross Country Championships in October of last year, set a league-record in today's mile run with a finish of 4:36.91, while the `Noles Gonzalo Barriolhet broke the league's all-time record with 5,765 points in the men's heptathlon. Both scores rank among the nation's top five in 2008. Next up for each of the league's 12 competing institutions are the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held in Fayetteville, Ark., on March 14-15.
