Mamona's Triple Jump Win Leads Clemson Track & Field at VT Elite Meet Blacksburg, VA - Patricia Mamona won the triple jump Saturday to highlight the final day of action for Clemson track & field at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet. Mamona jumped 43'7", which is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark, her third of the weekend in as many events. Mamona, who also qualified provisionally for the NCAA Indoor Championships yesterday in the 60m hurdles and long jump, held off teammate April Sinkler for first place Saturday. Sinkler, a native Virginian, jumped 41'7.75" which is also an NCAA provisional qualifying distance. Mamona's 43'7" jump matches her career-best in the indoor setting. Four Georgia Tech Jumpers Post Career Marks at VT Elite Meet Senior Jerome Miller broke the Tech indoor high jump record for the third time this season, as the Georgia Tech track & field team posted two first place finishes at the Virginia Tech Elite Invitational Saturday in Blacksburg, Va. Four Jacket jumpers tallied career bests on the final day of competition at the Rector Field House. After breaking the record with heights of 7-04.25 and 7-04.50 earlier this season, Miller took it a half inch further with a first-place mark of 7-05.00. The Stafford, Va. native, who currently has the highest mark in the nation, added to his outstanding senior season by winning his fourth high jump title in four meets on the year. Miller came within just one inch of the ACC indoor record.
Maryland Track and Field team makes their mark at the Virginia Tech Elite BLACKSBURG, Va. - The women's team shined with a number of outstanding individual performances that began with a win in the distance medley relay and ended with a great run in the 4x400m relay. Both are top times for the program. Sophomore Kiani Profit had a strong showing in all three of her events at the Virginia Tech Elite. She ran her best time to date in the 60m hurdles and placed 8th overall and 6th on Maryland's All-time list with a time of 8.74. She came back shortly after with her highest mark of 5-03.00 in the high jump which earned her the 9th position on the all-time list. Profit ended the meet with a 55.50 lead off leg for the 4x400m relay. Ahoure and Morse Lead Miami in Final Day of VT Elite BLACKSBURG, Va. - The University of Miami track and field teams completed the Virginia Tech Elite at the Rector Field House on Saturday at afternoon. Senior Murielle Ahoure, who owns the world's fastest time in the 60-meter dash this year, won the 200-meter dash with a provisional time of 23.26 seconds. The performance is also the best time of the year in the United States. The time was good enough for second-best in school history, behind only Lauryn Williams' time of 22.79. Junior Kristy Whyte narrowly missed a provisional time, with a fifth-place finish at 24.48. Martinez, Henry Lead Wolfpack Track & Field Teams Kwame Boatwright and Eric Davis both set season-highs in the high jump as NC State men's track and field wrapped up its stay at the VT Elite Meet. In addition, John Martinez competed at the New Balance Invitational in New York finishing fourth in the 3,000m with an 8:00.76. Martinez' mark was an NCAA Indoor Provisional time. Lawanda Henry crushed her own school record in the shot put by over two feet in securing her second NCAA provisional mark of the season. Olhovsky Sets Virginia Tech Record in Pole Vault BLACKSBURG, Va.– Junior Yavgeniy Olhovsky cleared a school record 18-02.50, and came in second in the men’s pole vault to highlight the final day of the VT Elite Meet on Saturday at the Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va. Olhovsky vaulted the personal-best 18-02.50 on his first attempt to break the old school record of 18-01.25, held by Brian Mondschein, who placed first in the event competing unattached. The height automatically qualifies Olhovsky for the NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas on March 13-14. Sophomore Hunter Hall placed third in the event with a clearance of 16-11 and won the tiebreaker over Chris Spear of Clemson and junior Jared Jodon of the Hokies, who took fifth with the same height. Sophomore Mike Miller cleared a personal-best 16-05.25 for sixth place. Morrison Finishes Second in Mile Run To Lead Deacs At VT Elite BLACKSBURG, Va. - Freshman Tom Morrison finished second out of 19 runners in the men's mile run to lead the Wake Forest men's and women's track & field team on the second day of the Virginia Tech Elite Meet at Rector Field House. Morrison crossed the line in a time of 4:10.72, which was just over a second and a half behind the race winner Ryley Miller of Georgia. In the women's 200-meter invite, junior Nicole Castronuova turned in a solid time of 24.39 to finish third overall.
Lehman, Ellis Highlight Second Strong Day At The Armory NEW YORK – After a strong first day of competition yesterday, the Duke men’s and women’s track & field teams picked up where they left off with another banner outing on day two of the 2009 New Balance Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York City. The Blue Devils saw an NCAA Provisional qualifier – their second of the weekend – on the women’s side, as well as nine more IC4A/ECAC qualifying marks in a meet that include over 100 college teams from around the country. Florida State Tops Charts In Final Day Of New Balance Collegiate Invitational New York, NY. - In just his first performance of the season, junior Charles Clark (Virginia Beach, Va.) showed his garnet and gold to the nation by running the fastest time in the country in a banked track for his 200m time of 20.83 (second best time overall). Clark wasn't the only Seminole on the warpath at the final day in New York though. Armory Track and Field Center made way for several provisional marks and records set by Florida State over the two-day competition. Although she has had great showings over the past couple of weeks, sophomore Teona Rodgers (Tampa, Fla.) is continuing the path of success as she took third in the 200m dash with 23.57 and set her self up to hold one of the top-seven times in the country. Rodgers' time earned her an NCAA provisional mark. Also making an NCAA provisional mark and resetting her personal record was junior Pilar McShine's (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago) first place finish in the mile run championship with 4:40.8. Felnagle, Tar Heel Women Perform Well At New Balance Invitational New York, N.Y. - The Tar Heel women placed first in the 4x200 meter relay with a time of 1:36.71 in front of South Carolina and Seton Hall Saturday at the New Balance Invitational at Armory Track in New York, N.Y. ACC schools Duke and Florida State also competed at the Armory Track this weekend. 10-time All-America Brie Felnagle placed first in the women’s 3000 meter run championship with a time of 9:04.58 and also automatically qualified for the NCAA’s. Felnagle’s time was just four seconds shy of her personal best. Junior All-America Lauren Holesh placed seventh (9:26.88) and senior Addie Bracy finished fifteenth (9:51.02) in the same event.
Women's Track & Field Wins Second Battle of Beantown Title CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's track and field team won its second Battle of Beantown Championship on Saturday at Harvard's Gordon Track and Tennis Center. The Eagles have won the event two years in a row. Boston College finished ahead of Harvard in the team standings. The Eagles accumulated 143 points while the Crimson finished with 132. Northeastern finished third while Boston University took fourth. The Boston College men's track and field team finished third at the Battle of Beantown held at Harvard's Gordon Indoor Track. The 4x800m relay team set the meet record in the event in its win.
Gay Shatters UVa Record in 800m STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - First-year Morgane Gay (Bethesda, Md.) highlighted the Virginia track and field teams’ performance at the Penn State National Invitational on Saturday, shattering the all-time program record in the 800m. Finishing fourth in 2:08.07, Gay replaced Km Kelly’s 2:09.27 time from 1985 as the top spot in Virginia history, and met the NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the event. Third-year Steve Finley (Palatine, Ill.) also had a solid performance, running a personal-best time of 2:27.99 to win the 1000m, while sophomore Greg Nelson (Burlington, Mass.) finished fifth in the high jump, clearing a season-best height of 6’ 9”.
