Georgia Tech's Makinson, North Carolina's Moriarty and Glavich Named ACC Swimming & Diving Performers of the Week
Nov. 8, 2011
GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina senior Laura Moriarty has been named the ACC Swimming & Diving Women’s Performer of the Week, announced by the conference on Tuesday. Georgia Tech junior Brandon Makinson and North Carolina freshman Dominick Glavich were named the Men’s Co-Performers of the Week.
Moriarty had the top performance in three individual events and also swam the breaststroke leg on the winning 200 medley relay as North Carolina’s women defeated previously undefeated Maryland 178-121 in dual meet action. The Methuen, Mass. native won the 200 breaststroke by a margin of over two seconds and the 400 IM by nearly three seconds over her closest competitor.
Makinson swept the diving events on the weekend, taking first in both the one- and three-meter dives against Clemson and Western Kentucky and then again against Penn State. Both of the scores against Penn State were season highs and NCAA qualifiers for the native of Alberta, Canada.
Glavich won both butterfly events and swam the breaststroke leg on North Carolina’s victorious 200 medley relay as the Tar Heels routed Maryland 180-119 in dual meet action. The Cary, N.C. native went 1:47.63, an NCAA “B” standard and the top time in the ACC this season, to win the 200 butterfly, just off his career best of 1:47.13 in the event.
