Florida State's Andy Hodgson and North Carolina's Megan Steeves Tabbed ACC Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week
Oct. 21, 2008 GREENSBORO, N.C. - Florida State's Andy Hodgson and North Carolina's Megan Steeves have been selected the season's first Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week. The league recognition is a career first for both student-athletes. A junior transfer from Blackpool, England, Hodgson made his debut for the Garnet and Gold clinching six individual victories to open the season. Hodgson won the 200 freestyle (1:39.41) and 200 backstroke (1:49.95) events to help defeat league foe Georgia Tech last Saturday, 164-135. Against Alabama, Hodgson took victories in the 200 free and 200 back to secure National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week honors. In the season opener against Florida Atlantic, he won the 100 and 200 back in times of 50.76 and 1:48.12, respectively. He ranks first in the ACC for the 200 back and second in the 200 free. Steeves, a junior from Newark, Del., has a pair of wins and a pair of runner-up finishes to open the 2008-09 campaign. Against No. 7 ranked Georgia, Steeves swam two league best times in the 100 back and 100 free. She finished second in both events with times of 55.18 and 50.68. Against South Carolina, Steeves won both the 100 back (55.64) and 200 back (1:59.64) events. She also swam the leadoff leg of UNC's winning 400 free relay team against South Carolina. Her time in the 200 back is also the fastest in the league this season.
Florida State (3-0, 1-0) will return to the pool on Nov. 1 at home against Indian River Community College and Florida A&M. The tri-meet begins at 11 a.m. North Carolina will travel this weekend to the Dallas Classic to face one of the nation's best fields. The meet runs Friday and Saturday nights and will start at 7 p.m. (CT).
