#ACCOlympics Jones Claims Silver Medal in 50M Freestyle
Aug. 3, 2012
Jones swam a time of 21.54 seconds, only hundredths of a second behind gold medalist Florent Manaudou of France with a 21.34. His time of 21.54 mirrors the time posted in the semifinals in the event.
The former Wolfpack standout jumped out to a great start and led for a portion of the race before Manaudou edged by him at the finish. Jones defeated the heavy favorite in the event Cesar Cielo of Brazil, who won the event at the 2008 Olympics and finished third in this year's event, by .05 seconds.
"I gave 100 percent, so I'm happy," Jones told the Raleigh News and Observer. "The time wasn't too bad and I'm thankful that I got second. I was dreaming of gold and I really wanted to get first, but it wasn't in the cards this time. I'll have to work with silver. And that's enough motivation for another four years, I think."
Jones was the 2006 national champion in the same event as a senior and is the holder of the NC State 50M freestyle record.
The medal represents Jones' first-ever individual medal at the Olympics. He now has three medals to his credit after taking gold in the 4x100M freestyle relay in 2008 and silver in this year's relay.
The 50M freestyle was Jones' final event of the Olympics. He also competed in the 100M freestyle.
