Tar Heels Send 20 Swimmers To Senior Nationals In August
July 19, 2005 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's and women's swimming teams will have 20 student-athletes competing in the 2005 United States Swimming Summer Nationals which will take place August 1-8 in Irvine, Calif. Senior Chad Ames (Crawfordsville, Ind.) has qualified in the most events, a total of six. Ames is one of 11 UNC swimmers who have been training in Chapel Hill this summer and have met qualifying standards to compete in the national meet. Ames will compete in the 100- and 200-meter butterfly events and the 200-meter individual medley as well as in the 400- and 800-meter freestyle and 400-meter medley relays. Other Tar Heels currently training at UNC who will be competing in Irvine beginning August 1 include senior Patrick Woodruff (Shoreline, Wash.) in the 200-meter breaststroke and on relays; senior Josh Glasco (Richmond, Va.) in the 100- and 200-meter butterfly events and on relays; junior Tristan Davidson (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) in the 200-meter individual medley; senior Jon Van Assen (Matawan, N.J.) in the 100-meter butterfly and on relays; junior Aaron Burns (Sinking Spring, Pa.) in the 100-meter breaststroke and on relays; junior Casey Kott (Morrisville, N.C.) in the 100-meter backstroke and on relays; sophomore Philip Owen (Scottsdale, Ariz.) in the 800- and 1500-meter freestyles; senior Lizzy Bruce (Wichita, Kan.) in the 100- and 200-meter breaststrokes; senior Amanda Smith (Evans City, Pa.) in the 500-meter freestyle; and junior Meagan Eickman (Spartanburg, S.C.) in the 100-meter backstroke. Four other UNC swimmers training in other parts of the nation this summer will also be at the meet. They include sophomore Lindsey Marck (Newtown, Pa.) in the 100- and 200-meter butterfly; sophomore Kelly Woodruff (Shoreline, Wash.) in the 200- and 400-meter individual medley; sophomore Keith Laabs (Memphis, Tenn.) in the 100-and 200-meter backstroke; and senior Jon Albrecht (Akron, Ohio) in the 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter backstroke. The cadre of Tar Heel swimmers will also include four incoming Carolina student-athletes. They are freshman Whitney Sprague (Bronxville, N.Y.) in the 400-, 800- and 1500-meter freestyles; freshman Nicole O'Donnell (Cornelius, N.C.) in the 800- and 1500-meter freestyles; freshman Lindsay McIlvain (Brentwood, Tenn.) in the 400- and 800-meter freestyles, 400-meter individual medley and 200-meter butterfly; freshman Bradley Mitchell (Somers, N.Y.) in the 100- and 200-meter breaststrokes; and freshman Harrison Browning (Cincinnati, Ohio) in the 200-, 400-, 800- and 1500-meter freestyles.
