Smocks Wins 200-Meter Butterfly In International Games

KFAR NETTER, ISRAEL - North Carolina junior Becky Smock won the 200-meter butterfly and took bronze in the 200-meter breaststroje to highlight swimming competition on the day of swimming competition at the 17th Maccabiah Games in Jerusalem, Israel Sunday.

Smock, a Tar Heel captain in 2005-06, won the 200 fly in 2:21.37. She took third in the 200 breast in 2:48.71.

Daniel Madwed smashed the Maccabiah Games record in the men's 200-meter butterfly. The 17 year-old Americn split 56.65 on his way to a 1:58.15 effort - his first time under the two-minute barrier and a time that is faster than both U.S. World Championship qualifiers.

Five Games records were set in the eight events swum today, as Israel won five events, the U.S. took three and those two countries accounted for all of the medals won this day.

Other Games records were set by:

Danit Kama (ISR), who went 2:18.36 in the women's 200-meter backstroke; Yoav Gat (ISR), 2:02.66 in the men's 200-meter backstroke; Anya Gostomelski (ISR), 57.62 in the women's 100-meter freestyle; and Bryan Goldberg (USA), 50.96 in the prelims of the 100 free.

The other winners were:

Becky Smock (USA), 2:21.37 in the women's 200m fly; Asala Halag (ISR), 2:46.93 in the women's 200m breast; Tom Beeri (ISR), 2:19.27 in the men's 200 breast, just nipping teammate Danny Melnik, 2:19.82; and Bryan Goldberg (USA), 51.06 in the men's 100m free, only .03 ahead of Israel's Shai Livnat. Two-time Olympian and U.S. team captain, Scott Goldblatt, was third in 52.04.
