![]() 2006-07 All-ACC Academic Women's Swimming and Diving Team Announced
July 5, 2007 GREENSBORO, N.C. - Fourteen All-Atlantic Coast Conference performers and a trio of NCAA All-Americans highlight the 2007 All-ACC Academic Women's Swimming and Diving Team, as announced Thursday by Commissioner John D. Swofford. Each of the league's 11 schools that sponsor swimming and diving is represented on the team. To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career. Florida State led all ACC schools with six nods, followed by five from North Carolina and Virginia Tech. Abbie King headlines for the Seminoles, as the sophomore picked up honorable mention honors for her part on the 200 medley relay team that placed 11th at the NCAA Tournament this past season. ACC Swimmer of the Year Jessica Botzum and Sara Smith led the Virginia Tech Hokies on the academic squad. Botzum earned All-America distinction in both the 100 and 200 breastroke events at the NCAA and was also named to the ESPN The Magazine All-America and All-District teams, while Smith was an NCAA All-American in the 100 freestyle and a honorable mention in the 50 free. Clemson, Miami and Virginia landed four academic picks, while Duke, Georgia Tech had three apiece. Divers Heather Bounds and Brittany Viola highlight the Hurricane contingent, as Bounds earned NCAA All-America honors in the platform event and was an honorable mention in both the 1-and 3-meter diving events. Viola, who was voted 2006-07 ACC Freshman of the Year, received All-America distinction in the platform and honorable mention honors in the 3-meter at the NCAA. UVa's Stephanie Glover received honorable mention recognition at the NCAA, after swimming the third leg in the 800 freestyle relay that finished 15th at the national postseason event. Boston College, Maryland and NC State each notched a pair to round out the 40-member academic squad. This year's academic team also consisted of 14 All-ACC performers, which included Clemson's Michelle Parkhurst and Rachel Regone, Florida State's Jen Guyler and King, Georgia Tech's Stephanie England, Miami's Bounds and Viola, North Carolina's Aubrette Biegel, Kristin Oxford and Megan Steeves, Virginia's Erin Corgan and Virginia Tech's Botzum, Millie Campbell and Smith.
