Ft. Myers, Fla. - The Open Water Nationals is a grueling event that pits some of the top distance swimmers in a long range swim off the coast of Florida each year. NC State swimmers competed in various events today, including rising sophomores Lucy Lindsey, Erica Smith and Cole Yarborough. Incoming freshman Nick Brittis also competed, and senior co-captain Lindsay Barwegen will swim in the 25K on Tuesday.

Brittis swam in the 5K and finished 42nd among 96 men in the competition. He will join the Wolfpack men's team this fall.

Erica Smith competed in the 5K for the women, and placed 51st among 81 participants.

In the longer event, the 10K, Yarborough and Lindsey both were among only 70 total participants to even finish the race. Yarborough placed 27th while Lindsey was 18th among the girls.
