GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia’s David Karasek has been recognized as the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year, announced today by the conference office. Karasek highlights the 2012 All-ACC Academic Men’s Swimming & Diving Team.
To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
A graduate student studying Professional Development, Karasek won ACC titles at the 2012 ACC Championship in the 200 individual medley and 200 freestyle, setting a new Virginia school record in the 200 IM. Also a member of the victorious Cavalier 800 freestyle relay, the native of Meisterschwanden, Switzerland finished his career with five ACC titles and was a member of four team championships. This is his third career All-ACC Academic honor.
At the national level, Karasek earned All-America honors on Virginia's fourth-place 800 freestyle relay as well as honorable mention accolades as a member of the 400 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams. He also was an All-American in the 200 freestyle with his seventh-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Championships. An eight-time All-American, Karasek swam at the NCAA Championships four times in his career and is expected to represent his native Switzerland at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Earning their fourth-career conference academic honors are Clemson’s Chris Dart and Virginia Tech’s Blake Trabuchi-Downey. Florida State’s Nicholas Klein, Georgia Tech’s Brandon Makinson, NC State’s Brandon Kingston, and Virginia Tech’s Greg Mahon, Logan Shinholser, and Matthew Baumler earned their third recognition.
