Georgia Tech's Evan Stowers Takes Gold in Men's Three-Meter Dive at ACC Swimming and Diving Championships
Feb. 16, 2006 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Georgia Tech sophomore Evan Stowers won the men's three-meter dive with a total of 373.05 points on Thursday, the second day of competition at the Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. Both men's and women's diving events are being conducted at the ACC Women's Championships, which began Wednesday at the University of Maryland's Campus Recreation Center Natatorium in College Park, Md. Stowers earned his first ACC title after finishing fourth in the three-meter as a freshman at the ACC meet last season. The Independence, Ky., native, who entered the ACC Championships ninth on the league's depth chart in the three-meter this season, shattered his previous season-best score of 344.10. Junior Derek Starks, who comprises Miami's entire men's swimming and diving team, notched a season-high score of 368.45 to take second place in the three-meter. Starks earned the bronze medal in the event in 2005. North Carolina sophomore Ryan Funderburk posted 355.10 points to take third place. Funerberk competed as an exhibition diver at the ACC meet last season. Florida State's Alex Tilbrook (347.85 points), Scott Derner (344.25) and Daniel Frebel (342.65) and North Carolina's Jon Fox (300.45) and Ryan Matuszak (274.60) also finaled in the three-meter board, and finished fourth through eighth, respectively. The men's one-meter dive will take place on Friday, with preliminaries starting at 1 p.m. and finals starting at 5 p.m. The rest of the Men's Swimming and Diving Championships will take place at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium from Feb. 22-25. -ACC-
