Maryland's Closs and Florida State's Sirounis Named ACC Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week
Feb. 10, 2009 GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland's John Closs and Florida State's Katie Sirounis have been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week. Closs won two events in the Terrapins' win over Georgetown while Sirounis swept both diving events in Florida State's loss to Auburn. Closs, a senior from New Providence, N.J., earned ACC Men's Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week honors for the first time this season with two event wins. He led the Terps win wins in the 50 free (21.22) and 100 free (46.79). He also took part in Maryland's second pace 200 medley relay team which finished in 1:35.31. His time in the 100 free set a new personal best on Maryland's senior day. Sirounis, a junior native of Indian Harbor Beach, Fla., notched zone qualifying scores in the 1-meter and 3-meter boards to claim ACC Women's Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week honors. On the 3-meter, Sirounis won with a score of 307.15 while she won the 1-meter board with a score of 273.20. The qualifying score on the 3-meter board is the fourth consecutive qualifying score for Sirounis in the event.
The league will now travel to the ACC Swimming and Diving Championships which will be hosted by the University of Maryland. The Women's Championship runs February 18-21 while the Men's Championship runs Feb. 25-28.
